BOSTON - The Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM) is expanding its series to include elite wheelchair athletes. For the first time, a male and female winner will be determined over a twelve-month period based on scoring earned via results from six iconic global races, and each will be awarded $50,000 for the championships.
The new series is set to begin at the April 2016 Boston Marathon, which in 1975 became the first major U.S. road race to recognize wheelchair participation. Including each of the AWMM qualifying races, Tokyo, Boston, Virgin Money London, BMW Berlin, the Bank of America Chicago and the TCS New York Marathons, AWMM Wheelchair Series X will begin at the April 2016 Boston Marathon and end upon completion of the April 2017 Boston Marathon. Each subsequent series will begin and end at the next AWMM race on the calendar.
"These athletes compete at the highest levels, and it's time for us to formally recognize the achievements of wheelchair athletes," said Tim Hadzima, AWMM general manager. "Our objective, and that of our title sponsor, Abbott, is to elevate marathoning across the globe by advancing and promoting all aspects of our great sport."

DALLAS - The Dallas Marathon board of trustees today presented a donation of $250,000 to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC), the primary beneficiary of the Dallas Marathon since 1997. Funds contributed to TSRHC are from corporate partnerships, online fundraising, individual gifts and year-round activities including the 2014 Dallas Marathon. TSRHC patients and their families, hospital volunteers and staff, Dallas Marathon representatives, partners and individual fundraisers attended an awards ceremony to commemorate the donation and recognize key figures in the running community, Meb Keflezighi and Joe Bacon, with individual awards.
"Supporting our longtime partner and primary beneficiary, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, is an important focus as we work to deliver a unique and entertaining experience at each of our organization's year-round events," said
Patrick Byerly, president of the Dallas Marathon. "TSRHC is truly an amazing place that helps so many children in the Dallas area and beyond reach their full potential. We're very proud to help support their mission through this year's donation and look forward to working with the hospital in 2015 and beyond."
Contributions from the Dallas Marathon - which is a 501(c)(3) organization - go toward general patient care at TSRHC.

HOUSTON ( April 22, 2015) - The Council for Responsible Sport announced today that the Houston Marathon Committee (HMC) has been awarded the Gold Certification for its achievements while hosting the 2015 Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon. The HMC earned credit on 46 of the best practice standards offered in the Council's certification program for social and environmental responsibility at sporting events.
In 2012, the HMC became the first organization to earn dual certification from the Council for separate events conducted on consecutive days (2012 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon; 2012 Chevron Houston Marathon). After earning Silver Level Certification in 2012, the HMC earned Gold in 2013-14 and are now recertified at the Gold level for 2015-16. Certification is achieved by complying with standards across five categories: planning and communications, procurement, access and equity, resource management and community legacy.
"The Council is very impressed with the diligence of the Houston Marathon Committee and staff," said Shelley Villalobos, certification director at the Council for Responsible Sport. "They've made and acted on a commitment to producing a responsible event year after year, including an eye for genuine improvement. They're not afraid of change when it's change for the better-and the results of that leadership are clear for all to see."
