Brutus Hamilton Challenge on Saturday at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley. The Cal men finished first with 210 points and the women finished second with 176 points in the scoring meet against UTEP, Kansas State and UC Davis. The Cal men, the third ranked dual meet team in the country coming into the weekend, figure to push forward in the polls with their comfortable victory on Saturday. Individually, the Don Bowden Mile was an incredible race, as Cal junior Thomas Joyce defeated the indoor national champion, UTEP’s Anthony Rotich, as Joyce set a new PR and moved into fourth on Cal’s All-Time Performers List with his time of 3:58.69, moving past Bowden himself. Additionally, teammates and fellow juniors Leland Later and Josh Lewis finished third and fourth, respectively, clocking times of 4:01.33 and 4:01.84, which are both lifetime bests.
“There is something magical about the mile,” Director of track and field Tony Sandoval said on Saturday. “I think the fans come out of the woodwork to see that and Thomas (Joyce) and his crew did not disappoint. For him to beat (UTEP’s Anthony) Rotich, who was the indoor national champion last year, says something. Thomas is going to be in a great position, because I think that he can kick with anybody. What is great too is that his training teammates Leland Later and Josh Lewis also ran around the 4:01 mark. That was a great finish for them and was certainly a highlight, but there were a lot of highlights this weekend. On the men’s side, we won the meet and placed second on the women’s side and I am very proud of their efforts.”
The Bears ran well in the men’s 100-meters, as sophomore Khalfani Muhammad won with a wind-aided time of 10.35 and freshman Karsten Wethington set a new personal best with a time of 10.77, improving on his previous best of 10.84. Muhammad also set a legal PR in the 200-meters, placing third with a time of 21.21. In the Tom Moore 110-meter hurdles, former Bear Ray Stewart claimed the event with an impressive time of 13.45. Stewart also claimed the 200-meters with a wind-aided mark of 20.91. Current freshman Ashtyn Davis equaled his PR, placing third with a mark of 14.13. In the intermediate hurdles, junior Jonte Turner set a new best with a mark of 52.01, finishing a close second and freshman Jalen Doss also posted a new best mark with a fourth place finish and time of 52.92.
Sophomore Khala Taylor set a new career best in the 400-meters, clocking a time of 55.96, a full three tenths of a second better than her previous PR mark. In the 200-meters, though their times were wind-aided, sophomore Jayla Scholis (24.40) and junior Jasiri Blake (24.60) performed very well, placing second and fourth, respectively in the women’s 200-meters.
The Bears went 1-2 in the men’s Upshaw Family Long Jump, as junior Jonte Grant captured the event with a leap of 24-8.50, while freshman teammate Walt Jones IV seized second place with his best jump on the day of 24-6.25. Grant also set a new PR in the triple jump, placing second with a leap of 52-4.75. Redshirt sophomore Ethan Cochran won the men’s discus with a mark of 187-0, while sophomore teammate Brenden Song set a new career best with his throw of 179-8 to place third.
11 Golden Bears also said goodbye to Edwards Stadium on Senior Day, as their home outdoor collegiate careers came to a close. Seniors Evan Barr, Grace Beaudoin, Rukayah Bent-Mikail, Heather Cerney, Cheri Chan, William Contreras, Scott Esparza, Collin Jarvis, Tara Lookabaugh, Sam Ralstin and Arielle Stevenson were all honored in a post-meet ceremony on Saturday.
The Golden Bears remain in the Bay Area next week for the Payton Jordan Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field on the campus of Stanford on Saturday, May 1. Fans are encouraged to follow along with live results, as well as on Twitter @Cal_Track.
