Berkeley, Calif. --Anthony Rotich was back at it again on Saturday at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge. The senior clocked a mile time of 3:59.93 to take second place in the mile run. Freshman Lilian Koech also had a solid weekend; the Kenyan native registered two personal bests during the two-day meet. On Saturday, she ran the 1,500m race in 4:26.24 (personal best) to finish second.
"Unfortunately, only a handful of our athletes were able to compete as expected," head coach Mika Laaksonen said. "Anthony Rotich stood out in his performance in the steeple and mile."
"We are physically and mentally tired; it has been an intense year. We experienced a few injuries also today that we hope to overcome by conference championships in three weeks."
"The plan is just to rest and get fresh by the conference meet. We will compete our athletes sparingly, if at all, in our final tune up (UTEP Twilight--May 1st)."
The Miners had four first-place finishers on Saturday. Nickevea Wilson won the triple jump with a bound of 12.78m (41-11.25), Roberto Camacho won his 400m hurdle race with a mark of 51.95, and in the 400m dash, Aiyanna Stiverne (53.36) and A-Shawni Mitchell (47.29) both won their respective races.
Abiola Onakoya (47.33) and Florence Uwakwe (53.55) both finished right behind their fellow teammates in the 400m dash for second-place finishes.
In the women's 100m hurdles, Greta Kerekes (13.83) and Bria Love (14.15) finished in second and fourth place. In the 100m dash, Arien Hardin matched her personal best of 10.26 to finish fifth; she then proceeded to register a fourth-place showing in the 200m dash with a time of 25.00. On the men's side, Reginald Hinson ran a wind-aided 10.59 100m dash to finish fourth.
Samantha Hall tossed the discus 50.99m (167-03) to pick up a fourth-place finish. Adebola Akomolafe (42.26m) and Fayon Gonzales (46.65m) notched personal bests in the discus as well.
Brandon Moss collected a third-place showing in the long jump with a mark of 7.16m (23-6.00). In the aforementioned men's mile, Cosmas Boit ran to a fifth-place finish in a race that featured two sub-four minute miles with a time of 4:03.22.
The men's team closed out the meet in solid fashion; the quartet of A. Mitchell, Camacho, James Bias and Onakoya were the first to cross the finish line in the 4x400m relay race with a time of 3:11.64.
The women's team finished third out of four teams at the meet: Kansas State-188, California-176, UTEP-128 and Utah State-99.
The men finished third as well: California-210, Kansas State-143, UTEP-128 and Utah State-80.
