Pac-12 announces outdoor track & field athletes of the week
SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the the week of April 6-12:
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: THOMAS JOYCE, CALIFORNIA (Jr., Moraga, Calif.). Junior Thomas Joyce won the double on Saturday at the 121st edition of the Big Meet at Stanford, setting a new school record, as well as a Big Meet record in the 1500-meters with a time of 3:39.43 to win the race. Joyce’s time ranks him first in the country in that event. He also won the 3000-meters with a personal-best time of 8:00.50. That 3000-meters time moved Joyce up to seventh on Cal’s all-time list. The Golden Bears captured their third-consecutive Big Meet team title, largely in part to Joyce’s efforts.

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: KENDALL ELLIS, USC (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.). Freshman Kendall Ellis won the 400-meter dash at the Jim Click Shootout with a time of 53.01, 1.26 seconds ahead of the next-closest finisher. Her time set the USC freshman record, which had been set by Malika Edmonson in 1998 (53.02). Ellis’ time also ties her for 11th in the country and is the fastest freshman time by over a second this season. Ellis also ran the leadoff leg and gave USC the lead in its winning 4x400-meter relay which posted a time of 3:32.87 to edge LSU. Redshirt-junior Pau Tonnesen competed in his first decathlon since the spring of 2013 this past week at the Jim Click Shootout and made up for lost time. After redshirting the 2014 outdoor season and 2015 indoor season, Tonnesen’s first decathlon as a Wildcat is the fifth-best score in UA history. His score of 7,783 points over the two days is the No. 2 score in the country on the year and tops in the Pac-12 by over 200 points.

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: JENNA PRANDINI, OREGON (Jr., Clovis, Calif.). Sophomore Jenna Prandini flew to a win in the long jump with a best mark of 21-0.5, beating out a strong field that contained Kentucky’s Kenyattia Hackworth and teammate Jasmine Todd. The mark from the junior ranks fourth in the NCAA this season.
