WILLIAMS SETS STANFORD
INDOOR RECORD
Junior breaks Husky Classic 400
standard
For the second consecutive year, Stanford junior Kristyn
Williams set school and meet records in the 400 meters to win the Husky Classic
indoor track and field meet in Seattle.
Williams ran 53.35 on the 307-meter flat track at
University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor facility Saturday to break her own
year-old records by 0.01. She was among seven Stanford performers who moved into
the Stanford all-time Top 10 indoor list or improve upon their existing marks at
either the Husky Classic or the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, New
Mexico.
Chief among them was Elise Cranny, who ran 9:02.36 to
place fifth in a fast 3,000 and moved to No. 4 at Stanford all-time. She also is
now the second-fastest Cardinal freshman ever, and the fastest since Ceci Hopp
ran 8:57.27 in 1982.
At Don Kirby, sophomore triple jumper Carla Forbes leaped
41-3 ¾ to move to No. 5 all-time indoors and freshman Harrison Williams moved to
No. 6 at Stanford in the men’s 60 hurdles by placing sixth in
8.19.
Williams, a junior human biology major, earned a second
victory by running the second leg on the Cardinal’s victorious 4x400 relay,
joining Gaby Gayles, Claudia Saunders, and Michaela Crunkleton Wilson to run
3:40.66.
In the 400, she edged 2012 800-meter Olympian Alysia
Montano, who was second. Gayles took third in 54.73 – moving up to No. 8 on the
Cardinal list.
Other Top-10 performances came from freshman Anna Laman in
the women’s 800, running 2:07.89 for No. 9 all-time. Sophomore Sean McGorty also
moved up to No. 9 – in the men’s 3,000 (7:54.68), while placing
ninth.
Stanford athletes will have one more chance to earn
qualifying marks for the NCAA Championships, when they compete at the Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation meet at the same Dempsey Indoor track at University of
Washington, on Feb. 27-28.
