SEATTLE, WASH. - Dior Hall won the women's 60m HH, Andre De Grasse the men's 60m dash and the women's 4x400m relay team won with a meet record time at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Indoor Track & Field Championships being held at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Wash. today (Feb. 28). The USC women's team won their second consecutive MPSF title, while the men's team took second in their inaugural season in the conference.
"We are excited about out performances this weekend," said USC Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert. "Just about everyone on our team stepped up and met our challenge to win, PR or score points. Our coaches prepared the team to compete at a championship level and we had a few more athletes qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. I am always very proud when we do our best. I believe we represented USC extremely well and fought like Trojans until the very end. We will definitely have a solid showing in Fayetteville in two weeks."
The freshman Hall continued to impress and announce her arrival at the collegiate level by capturing the 60m HH crown with a time of 8.11. Senior Melia Cox took fourth in the event with a time of 8.34. Together Hall (10) and Cox (5) earned the Trojans 15 points in the team competition.
Freshman Marquís Morris took third in the men's 60m high hurdles with a time of 7.95 to earn USC six points. Senior Allen Williams finished sixth with a time of 8.11 to earn three more points.
Teammates junior De Grasse and senior BeeJay Lee were separated by just .005 seconds in the men's 60m dash with De Grasse winning the title at 6.61 (6.602) and Lee taking second with a PR of 6.61 (6.607). The pair teamed up to gain 18 points for the Trojans in the team battle.
The Trojan women finished 3-6 in the 60m race to pick up 18 points in the team competition. Redshirt junior Tynia Gaither was third with a PR of 7.23, freshman Deanna Hill was fourth with a PR of 7.28, junior Alexis Faulknor was fifth with a time of 7.34 and sophomore Destinee Brown was sixth with a time of 7.40.
The women's team took control of the meet by amassing 23 points in the 400m race and moving into first place to stay. USC's first four finishers all set PRs with junior Jaide Stepter taking second with a time of 52.89, freshman Kendall Ellis finishing third with a time of 53.19, seniorVanessa Jones taking fourth with a time of 53.33 and sophomore Amalie Iuel finishing fifth with a time of 53.38. Sophomore Cameron Pettigrewfinished 11th with a time of 54.89.
Freshman Ricky Morgan finished second in the men's 400m race with a time of 47.32. Morgan was just .02 seconds out of winning the title.
The 800m races were the final individual running competitions for USC. Freshman Robert Ford placed fourth in the men's race with a time of 1;49.32 to earn USC five points in the team competition. Senior Myles Andrews placed 11th in the men's 800m race with a time of 1:50.63 and freshman David Manahan took 20th with a time of 1:54.73. Senior Erica Capellino and junior Reika Kijima both set PRs in the women's 800m race with Capellino finishing 17th with a time of 2:11.54 and Kijima taking 18th with a time of 1:54.55.
Junior Tera Novy had a PR of 49-11.00 (15.21m) in the women's shot put to place seventh and earn USC two more points. Sophomore Tanya Sapa had a best throw of 42-6.75 (12.97m) to finish 16th.
Redshirt freshman Nick Ponzio also set an indoor PR with a mark of 60-5.25 (18.43m) in the men's shot put competition. He finished sixth and earned the men's team three points.
Senior Michael Krone placed second and freshman Randall Cunningham tied for third in the men's high jump competition to gain an additional 13.5 points for USC. Both athletes cleared 7-0.25, Krone tying his PR set in 2011 and Cunningham matching his season best.
Cox came back to take second in the women's triple jump with a best leap of 40-8.75 (12.41m). She earned eight points for her efforts. Williams came back to compete in the men's triple jump and placed 11th with a best jump of 46-4.00 (14.12m).
The women's team already had the meet clinched, but finished things out in style by winning the 4x400m relay with a meet-record time of 3:33.58. USC's relay team in order was Ellis, Iuel, Jones and Stepter.
The men's relay team of Morgan, junior Just'N Thymes, freshman Adoree' Jackson and senior Davonte Stewart took second with a season-best time of 3:08.74 and earned USC's final eight points.
USC won seven titles during the two-day meet with De Grasse winning the men's 60m, Faulknor winning the women's long jump, Hall winning the women's 60m HH, Hill winning the women's 200m, Lee winning the men's 200m, Conor McCullough winning the men's weight throw and the women's 4x400m relay taking the conference crown.
The final top 5 team scores were:
