STANFORD’S TONN WINS AT
HUSKY CLASSIC
Big kick wins 5,000 for Cardinal
runner
SEATTLE – Jessica Tonn used a big kick on the final
turn to win the women’s invitational 5,000-meter race at the Husky Classic on
Friday at University of Washington and remained undefeated against collegiate
competition during the indoor track and field season.
Tonn ran 15:47.65 on the 307-meter flat Dempsey Indoor
track to make her the No. 4 performer on Stanford’s all-time indoor list, moving
ahead of three-time NCAA outdoor 5K champ Lauren Fleshman. The victory kept
continued an outstanding season for the fifth-year senior, who set personal
bests in the mile and 3,000 in her first two races.
Stanford sent its runners to the Husky Classic and
field-event athletes to the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, New
Mexico, in an effort to secure qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor
Championships on March 13-14 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The top 16 marks in the
country through March 1 earn passage to nationals.
Tonn’s 5,000 time placed her at No. 5 in the country. She
already has the No. 2 mark in the 3,000. In the same race. Tonn was among a
five-runner pack on the final lap led by Arkansas’ Diane Robison. Sandie Raines
of Texas moved into the lead on the backstretch, but Tonn patiently waited for
the right moment and pushed hard to win going away.
Stanford sophomore Vanessa Fraser ran a personal best –
including indoors and outdoors – of 16:20.30 to place 13th. Fraser
stayed patient early in the race as teammate Rebecca Mehra took pacesetting
duties, but moved up consistently throughout the race.
In the men’s 5,000 invitational, Stanford’s Erik Olson was
sixth in a fast race that featured 13 runners under 14 minutes. Olson, a
fifth-year senior, ran 13:45.25 and sophomore teammate Jack Keelan set a
personal best of 13:54.26 to finish 10th.
