NYC's Passell Recovers from Broken Hip, Wins Disney Princess Half Marathon

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - (Feb. 22, 2015) - One year after
Lauren Passell feared she would never run again because of a broken hip, she found herself in another unlikely place Sunday - the winner's circle at the Disney Princess Half Marathon presented by Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Passell, 30, from New York City, slipped on some ice last winter, breaking her right hip and plunging her running future into serious doubt. "I didn't think I'd ever run a race again,'' she said.

Turns out, all she really needed was a little Disney magic.

"I was afraid actually (to run again) but this race really pulled me through,'' said Passell (above, image via runDisney), who couldn't walk for four months after the injury, took disability leave from her job and didn't run normally again for nearly a year. "When I was stuck on my couch (during her recovery), I would dream about running here, I would fantasize about it. I mean, for me to run through Disney, it means the world to me. I feel like the luckiest person in the world.''

ATLANTA - Atlanta Track Club, organizer of the AJC Peachtree Road Race, announced that registration for the 2015 event will open on Sunday, March 15 through an online lottery at AJC.com/peachtree. July 4, 2015 will mark the 46th running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race. Those wishing to be one of the 60,000 participants selected can register for the event lottery online anytime during the eight day period beginning Sunday, March 15 until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 22.

Regardless of the day or time of registration, all individuals who enter the lottery during the eight day period will have an equal chance of being selected for the 2015 AJC Peachtree Road Race. Entrants will be randomly selected after the lottery closes on March 22. All lottery entrants will receive an email by Wednesday, March 25 informing them of whether or not they were selected for the 2015 event. Searchable results of the selection process will also be posted on peachtreeroadrace.org and AJC.com/peachtree on March 25.

QUANTICO, Va. - The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) has received Gold certification, the highest level awarded by the Council for Responsible Sport for being socially and environmentally responsible as a wod-class running event. The MCM has been recognized for enacting best practices during the 39th MCM held on Oct. 25, 2014. The MCM earned 45 credits to become the largest U.S. marathon to earn this distinction among environmentally-conscious sporting events.
According to the Council, the MCM earned credit for both meeting and exceeding standards for Effective Planning and Communications; Procurement of products and supplies and work with partners with environmental focus; Resource Management; Public Access and Equity for all participants and for the MCM's ongoing efforts toward building a Community Legacy.

NAPA, Calif.  - Three recent champions will return to the world-renowned Napa Valley and anchor a small, but talented, elite field at the Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon on Sunday, March 1, 2015
Chris Mocko (San Francisco, Calif.),  Devon Yanko (San Anselmo, Calif.), and  Michelle Meyer (San Francisco, Calif.). They will head a sold-out contingent of 3,000 participants, many of whom return to the race year after year to experience its fast point-to-point 26.2 mile course and rural splendor.

The gently-rolling course has stayed the same for the entire 36-year history of the event. The course is certified (for accurate distance) by USA Track & Field.

Mocko and Yanko have each ascended the winner's podium two times at the Napa Valley Marathon (NVM). Mocko, age 28, won the men's race in 2011 and 2012. Yanko (née Crosby-Helms), age 32, topped the women's field in 2007 and 2012, and her 2012 finishing time of 2 hours, 39 minutes, and 37 seconds is the current women's course record.

JUST RUN, the youth fitness program developed by leaders from the
Big Sur International Marathon, was named
National Youth Program of the Year by
Running USA at its recent annual industry conference in New Orleans.

"JUST RUN's involvement in the sport of youth running continues to not only inspire thousands of children to live healthy, active lives, but provides a wonderful model for other teachers and leaders to develop in their communities," said Running USA CEO Rich Harshbarger as he presented the award and a $5,000 check in front of 700 industry leaders.  "This program provides all the components necessary to create long-lasting, healthy change for children within their communities."

Begun in 2004 to combat the childhood obesity epidemic, JUST RUN has positively affected the lives of thousands of children in more than 30 states.  Since its inception, 89,000 children in the program have run more than 2.3 million miles in running and fitness activities that span the academic school year.  This school year, an expected 20,000 children will participate, logging over 400,000 miles.

"Being recognized by our peers in the running industry is a great honor.  This award will inspire us to continue in our vital efforts to promote youth fitness and healthy lifestyles among our youth," stated Susan Love, JUST RUN Program Director.
