ALBUQUERQUE – In the first multi-event meet of the season a trio of Bruins shined at the New Mexico Classic, held in the Albuquerque Convention Center this weekend.
All-American Marcus Nilsson started off his 2015 campaign nearly how he ended his 2014 season in the same stadium. Nilsson recorded his second highest heptathlon score by posting 5,709 points, to win the two-day event.
Nilsson cleared a personal best 16-4.75 to win the pole vault as his second day of action included 898 points in the 60m hurdles and 821 points in the 1000m.
Freshman Steele Wasik placed fifth in his first collegiate heptathlon by recording 5,271 points. His best performance came in the 60m hurdles where he posted the fastest time in the event with a time of 8.17.
Alexis Walker finished second in her first pentathlon since the 2013 indoor season. Walker easily set a personal best by recording 3,933 points. Walker started off the meet with a personal best in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.68. She then concluded her pentathlon with a winning time of 2:21.58 in the 800m.
The Bruins will return to the indoor oval next weekend at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational. The distance squad will head to the Husky Classic. Both meets are scheduled to start on Friday, Feb. 13.
