WICHITA, Kan. (Feburary 13, 2015) - A record number of attendees, outstanding speakers and an exciting host city all contributed to the success of the 12th edition Running USA Industry Conference powered by ACTIVE Network, February 8-10 in New Orleans. Throughout the three-day conference, Running USA handed out four separate awards and inducted three new members of the Running USA Hall of Champions, and awarded $35,000 in grants to deserving programs.

This year's three Hall of Champions honorees were pioneering female marathoner Kathrine Switzer, Chevron Houston Marathon race director Brant Kotch and Competitor Group Senior Vice President Tracy Sundlun. The Hall of Champions award is reserved for individuals who have made a difference in the sport of road running at the highest levels, while continuing to show devotion, vision, and commitment to their respective ventures and the runners they serve.

"Kathrine, Brant and Tracy have each devoted decades of their lives to improving the sport of distance running for everyone around them," says Running USA CEO Rich Harshbarger. "Their enthusiasm and drive to inspire thousands of runners each and every year is what makes them true champions."

Nearly 42 million Americans are considered runners today, with 25- to 34-year-olds representing the largest age group.* Will these fitness-conscious Millennials follow in their forerunners' footsteps and drop out of the race at 35? Or are they already defining a watershed time in the running industry?

Running USA and RacePartner are conducting a research study to find out why so many Millennials (born 1980-2000) get involved in running, and what organized running events can do to keep them interested and engaged.

"Research and data are strong building blocks of Running USA.  We are excited to work with Race Partner to learn more about the impact this important generation might have on our sport," said Rich Harshbarger, CEO of Running USA.

"Young adults today have grown up with fitness and technology as part of their daily lives," said Rob Anderson, founding partner of RacePartner, a leader in endurance event registration. "We want to learn insights to inform the industry on how to design events to keep these runners coming back even when they start to have careers and families."

The Millennial Running Study will be released in 2016.
