ALBUQUERQUE, N.M./SEATTLE – The California Golden Bears track and field sent a split squad to the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. and the Husky Classic in Seattle for day one of each of the respective meets. Redshirt senior Chioma Amaechi claimed the women’s weight throw title with a mark of 66-8.50 (20.33m) in Seattle, while freshman Ginika Iwuchukwu set a new PR with a mark of 50-1.75 (15.28) to place 20th in the same event. Freshman Jayla Scholis posted a time of 25.12 in the 200-meters, while fellow freshman Jasiri Blake improved on her first effort in the event with a 25.56 on Friday for the Bears. On the men’s side in Albuquerque, sophomore transfer Walt Jones IV eclipsed his mark from the New Mexico Team Challenge two weeks ago in the long jump with a mark of 23-8.00 (7.21m), while his teammate, freshman Karsten Wethingtonmade his collegiate debut with a mark of 23-2.50 (7.07m).
