JUST RUN, the youth fitness program developed by leaders from the Big Sur International Marathon, was named National Youth Program of the Year by Running USA at its recent annual industry conference in New Orleans.

"JUST RUN's involvement in the sport of youth running continues to not only inspire thousands of children to live healthy, active lives, but provides a wonderful model for other teachers and leaders to develop in their communities," said Running USA CEO Rich Harshbarger as he presented the award and a $5,000 check in front of 700 industry leaders.  "This program provides all the components necessary to create long-lasting, healthy change for children within their communities."

Begun in 2004 to combat the childhood obesity epidemic, JUST RUN has positively affected the lives of thousands of children in more than 30 states.  Since its inception, 89,000 children in the program have run more than 2.3 million miles in running and fitness activities that span the academic school year.  This school year, an expected 20,000 children will participate, logging over 400,000 miles.

"Being recognized by our peers in the running industry is a great honor.  This award will inspire us to continue in our vital efforts to promote youth fitness and healthy lifestyles among our youth," stated Susan Love, JUST RUN Program Director.

NEW YORK - Defending Boston Marathon champion
Meb Keflezighi and compatriot Dathan Ritzenhein, running the half-marathon distance for the first time since the 2013 NYC Half, will lead a resilient field of American men against a strong international contingent highlighted by last year's third-place finisher Stephen Sambu and 2012 Boston Marathon champion Wesley Korir at the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half on Sunday, March 15, 2015, it was announced this week by Mary Wittenberg, president and CEO of New York Road Runners.

"From Meb and Dathan to Stephen and Wesley, the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half professional men's field is one of our best ever," said Wittenberg. "We're especially excited that our lead group of men will be running alongside the many young runners who will be participating in the event's inaugural NYRR Times Square Kids' Run on Seventh Avenue, creating an inspiring and unique moment that will help us celebrate the tenth running of the race."

ST. LOUIS, Mo.  - GO! St. Louis, a local not-for-profit organization that specializes in presenting fitness events and programs year-round announced a new race course for the 2015 GO! St. Louis Marathon (the only downtown St. Louis marathon in 2015), Half Marathon and Marathon Relay, set for Sunday, April 12.

After months of planning and meetings with local officials in Missouri and Illinois, the 26.2 mile course is designed to showcase the beautiful Mississippi riverfront, from both the Missouri and Illinois sightlines, as participants traverse on the Eads and MLK bridges.  In addition, the course maintains some of the elements from the previous course, such as views of the Gateway Arch, St. Louis Skyline, Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Soulard, Union Station Saint Louis University and Forest Park.

"A new course has been something that we wanted to offer the community for many years, so after planning started for our 15-year anniversary, we decided it was a great time to start the process to make it a reality, said Nancy Lieberman," GO! St. Louis President.

DULUTH, Minn. - Grandma's Marathon-Duluth, Inc. has announced the retirement of Jon Carlson as the executive director effective September 30, 2015.

"My 12 years here with Grandma's Marathon have been more enjoyable and rewarding than I could have ever imagined. Obviously, this year's Grandma's Marathon will now mean a bit more than the others," Carlson said. "In the meantime, we have a lot of work left to do to ensure a great event for the participants coming to our race in June, and I am eager to continue our focus toward that goal."

Carlson, 61, was the nonprofit organization's race director from July 2003 until September 2013, when he was chosen to succeed Scott Keenan, who stepped down after 37 years with the organization. Keenan started Grandma's Marathon with the North Shore Striders Running Club in 1977 and in May 2013 announced Grandma's Marathon that year would be his last as executive director.
