BROOKS WINS MPSF TITLE
WITH RECORD JUMP
Stanford’s Tonn wins 3,000; Coyle runs sub-4
mile
SEATTLE – Darian Brooks set a Stanford indoor
record in the triple jump to win the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation track
and field championship title Saturday.
Brooks, the reigning Pac-12 champion, reached 52-2 ¾ on
his fourth jump to win by a foot and break Stanford’s 2006 mark of 51-10 ½ by
Solomon Welch. Brooks’ effort highlighted performances by Stanford’s men, who
finished sixth with 61.5 points. Brooks now owns both the indoor and outdoor
school records.
Jessica Tonn captured the mile in 4:40.03 to become
Stanford’s first MPSF champion in that event since Lauren Centrowitz in 2009.
Tonn remained undefeated against collegiate competition this season in any
event, and became a double MPSF champion, following her leadoff effort on the
Cardinal’s winning distance medley relay Friday.
The Cardinal women, who placed fifth with 52 points, also
got runner-up finishes from sophomore Vanessa Fraser in the 3,000 meters. Fraser
moved up the field throughout the race, taking the lead on the final lap before
Arizona’s Elvin Kibet made a decisive move on the backstretch. Fraser ran
9:16.94 to set a personal best by eight seconds.
In his multi-events competition as a collegian, Stanford
freshman Harrison Williams finished a close second in the seven-event
heptathlon. Williams scored 5,539 points, only to fall four shy of Oregon’s
Mitch Modin. Williams, the 2014 U.S. junior national decathlon champion, made a
strong effort in the final event, the 1,000, but it wasn’t quite enough. Still,
the total is the second-highest in Stanford history.
Fifth-year senior Erik Olson may have booked a ticket to
the NCAA Championships by running 7:51.26 to finish second in the 3,000. The top
16 national marks in each event through this weekend earn passage to the NCAA’s
March 13-14 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
In the mile, Thomas Coyle ran 3:59.32 to become the
14th in Stanford history, indoors or outdoors, to run a sub-4. Coyle
finished third in the race and became the second Cardinal sophomore this season
break four minutes, following Sean McGorty.
In all, eight Cardinal set personal bests Saturday,
including freshman Gaby Gayles, who was seventh in the 400 in 54.31 – just
behind teammate Kristyn Williams at 54.30. Gayles moved to No. 5 on Stanford’s
all-time indoor list and No. 3 among freshmen, including indoors and
outdoors.
