TUCSON -- The Arizona State men and women track and field squads took care of business on Saturday at the Roy P. Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz., sweeping the University of Arizona in the 45th annual Duel in the Desert.
While the men clinched the meet with three events to go – eventually winning 110-87 – the women battled back and forth before eventually sealing the deal with one event remaining for a 105-92 victory. The men made it the 10th-straight dual meet win over the Wildcats while the women made it two straight.
After tallying the first points of the meet with victories in both the men’s and women’s hammer throw, the Sun Devils seemingly never looked back. Both redshirt sophomore Magdalyn Ewen and redshirt junior Kyle Long won their respective events to start the afternoon, with throws of 65.65 meters (215-4) and 60.84 meters (199-7), respectively.
The throw for Ewen became a new personal best for Ewen and ranks as the third best in the country. Along with her top performance in the hammer, Ewen would also take the top spot in the discus throw and shot put, totaling 15 points for the women. All three of her throws were in the top-10 on the all-time dual meet list, with her discus and hammer ranking 3rd and her shot put mark ranking 7th.
Redshirt junior jumper Tim White (Santa Clarita) returned to the team after spending the last two months in spring football practice, and started right where he left off. While he rarely competes in the long jump, White set a new personal best and won the event with a mark of 7.64m (25-0.75). About an hour later, he competed in his main event – the triple jump – and took first with a jump of 15.81m (51-10.50), which currently ranks 20th in the country. White’s triple jump mark ranks third-best all-time in dual meet history, while his long jump was fifth-best all-time.
Fellow jumper Keyasia Tibbs also placed first in both the long and triple jump events, breaking 6-meters in the long jump for the first time in her career with a leap of 6.17m (20-3.00). She made dual meet history with her jump of 13.05m (42-9.75), breaking UA’s Carole Jones dual meet record set in 1987 of 12.97m (42-06.75).
ASU freshman took care of business in the javelin throw, as Hudson Keffer continued to climb the ASU all-time list in the javelin throw, moving to second on the top-10 list with a throw of 73.08m (239-9). The toss also becomes the best throw by an ASU athlete ever in the dual meet and best throw by any athlete since 1998. Rookie Jessica Barreira also took first in her event, throwing a new personal record of 43.37m (142-3).
Meanwhile on the track, senior Jamol James blitzed to wins in the 100-meter dash at 10.42 and 200-meter dash at 20.96. In the 100, the Sun Devil men actually went 1 through 4, with Reggie Lewis taking second, Isaiah Underwood taking third and Ben Trotter taking fourth. In the 200, Lewis took third and Underwood took fourth.
Victories by Mason Ford in the high jump and Dillon Groener (Chino Hills) in the pole vault would eventually clinch the dual meet for the ASU men with two events remaining, extending their winning streak over Arizona.
Barreira’s win in the javelin and senior Ginger Jarchow’s second-place finish would also clinch the women’s victory in a tight match that lasted throughout the meet.
The Wildcat women won seven of the 11 track events, but the Sun Devils made up for the deficit in the field events.
Redshirt senior Shaina Corbin started it off on the right foot for the women Devils, cruising to a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:48.17.
The women’s 4x100 relay followed with the race coming down to a sprint for the last 100-meters. The officials ruled an ‘outside of the zone’ penalty and therefore disqualified the Sun Devils and took away their victory.
In the 100-meter sprints however, senior Jasmine Gibbs would take the victory with a new personal best time of 11.57. LaTroya Franklin (Long Beach) was right behind her in second with a time of 11.87.
Three races later, Franklin led the women with a first-place time and season-best time of 23.88.
A late victory by Chelsey Totten (Santa Clarita) in the 3,000-meter run would be the dagger for the Devils.
The Sun Devil men and women will now take a week to prepare before the Pac-12 Championships from May 14-15 in Seattle, Washington at the University of Washington.
