By Cal Athletics on Sat, May 28, 2016
LAWRENCE, KAN. --- On the final day of the NCAA West Regionals, four members of the California track and field teams punched their tickets to Eugene.
The sophomore foursome of Isabella Marten, Ashtyn Davis, Ashley Anderson and Peter Simon earned their place at the NCAA Championships with top-10 performances Saturday at the University of Kansas' Rock Chalk Park.
Davis and Anderson will be making their first appearances at an NCAA championship event, while Simon and Marten will be making their second trip to nationals this year after going to indoors in March. Marten's trip will be the third of her career after making it to outdoors last year as a freshman at SMU.
Marten (42-8.25 / 13.01m) and Anderson (42-4.25 / 12.91m) finished seventh and ninth respectively in the triple jump, with Anderson setting a new PR in the process. In the 110 meter hurdles, Davis missed matching his PR by just .06 seconds with his ninth place time of 13.82. Finally, Simon recorded a throw of 61-3.50 (18.68m) to place tenth in the shot put.
Other Bears posted noteworthy efforts during the day despite not being able to advance. Sophomore Bethan Knights (16:26.34) placed 13th in the 5000 meters - a mere .47 seconds shy of the final qualifying spot. Junior Khalfani Muhammad set a new outdoor PR in the 200 meters (20.80) while sophomore Karsten Wethington extended his triple jump PR to 50-11.00 (15.52m). A pair of season bests were recorded as well: seniors Jonte Grant (51-3.00 / 15.62m) and Sydney Gray (4:22.34) ended their final Cal meets with their best 2016 marks in the triple jump and 1500 meters.
"I thought our athletes responded well to the inclement weather that forced the vault and jumps indoors and trimmed the meet from three days to two," Cal Director of Track & Field Tony Sandoval said. "For our four sophomores to qualify to Eugene is a testament to their poise and toughness. We had a number of close qualifiers as well in (Khalfani) Muhammad, (Bethan) Knights, (Jonte) Grant, (Ilse) Kaaja, and (Marissa) Williams - their efforts speak to how hard everyone worked."
The 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field from June 8-11 in Eugene. More information about the Championships will be posted on CalBears.com as the event draws closer.
