Burns Named USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INDIANAPOLIS — Thomas Burns (Miami, Fla.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning three titles in five hours in the 13-14 boys’ division at the USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships last week in Edwardsville, Ill.

Burns clocked the fastest times of the day for his age group in the 100m hurdles (14.15), 200m hurdles (24.88) and 400m (51.07). Burns’ largest margin of victory came in the 400m where he surpassed his nearest competitor by more than a second and a half.

“It feels great,” said Burns. “I’m extremely honored to be in this position. I wasn’t aware it all happened in less than five hours.”

Burns was originally scheduled to run the 100m hurdles on Saturday and his two remaining races on Sunday. However, once competition was suspended on Saturday evening due to weather, Burns had to adapt to a condensed schedule.

“First, I had to figure out when they were going to schedule the 100m hurdles, so I could have enough time to mentally prepare myself,” said Burns. “Then, I concentrated on the other two races.”

Video of Burns' performances is available to watch on-demand at www.USATF.tv
