Carrier-Eades in lead after day one of Thorpe Cup

Chelsea Carrier-Eades and Kiana Profit helped Team USA to a big first day lead and currently sit as the top two individual scores in the women’s heptathlon as day one of the 20th Thorpe Cup kicked off Saturday at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. Team USA men, behind Gray Horn’s first day total of 4124, currently trail Germany in the men’s decathlon. Competition concludes Sunday.

A nation versus nation decathlon and heptathlon competition between the United States and Germany, the Thorpe Cup takes the top five men’s scores and the top three women’s scores to determine an overall team winner. Team USA women grabbed three of the top four spots after the first day to help it grab a 10,644-10,182 advantage. On the men’s side, it was Germany that landed men in three of the top four spots to help it to a 20,451-20,104 advantage. Complete first day results can be seen here.

Carrier-Eades used her superior sprint speed in recording the fastest 100m hurdles and 200m dash times of the day, which helped her to a first day total of 3606. Profit used consistent performances all day and currently sits in second with 3554. Sami Spenner currently sits in fourth overall with a total of 3484.

Horn is currently the lone American in the top six of the men’s standings with his day one total of 4124. Isaac Murphy grabbed the second best American score of the day at 4038 and was followed by Wesley Bray (4023), Austin Bahner (4003) and Ryann Harlan (3916) to round out the top five for Team USA.

Other Team USA men’s decathlon scores included: Dakotah Keys (3863), Daniel Gooris (3825).

Other Team USA women’s heptathlon scores included: Lindsay Schwartz (3448), Heather Miller (3436), Lindsay Lettow (3422), Ryann Krais (3347).

Top five men’s German scores included: Rene Stauss (4204); Patrick Spinner (4079); Steffen Fricke (4068); Simon Helcher (4061); Mattias Prey (4039).

Top three women’s German scores included: Maren Schwerdtner (3508); Anna Maiwald (3458); Alina Biesenbach (3216).
