Team USA Relays lead successful U.S. night in Monaco

7/19/2013

MONACO - Team USA’s 4x100m teams swept the top two places in the men’s and women’s relays to lead the way for eight American wins at the Herculis Monaco Diamond League Meet on Friday.

After a successful Team USA relay camp, the women’s 4x100m relay teams ran to a 1-2 finish in the first track event of the day. Team USA Red (Octavious Freeman, Allyson Felix, English Gardner and Carmelita Jeter) ran to a meet record and world-leading time of 41.75. Team USA Blue (Jeneba Tarmoh, Alexandria Anderson, Barbara Pierre, Aurieyall Scott) crossed the line in 41.78, while the French team took third in 43.46.

On the men’s side, it was the quartet of Charles Silmon, Mike Rodgers, Mookie Salaam and Justin Gatlin who combined efforts to take the win for USA Red in a meet record and world leading time of 37.58. Team USA Blue (Jeff Demps, Diondre Batson, Dentarius Locke, Calesio Newman) claimed second in 38.26.

Jenny Simpson led the way for a strong show by the U.S. women in the 1500m. Simpson ran just off the shoulder of pace-setter Phoebe Wright, and entered the bell lap in first. However, Simpson was soon passed by Hellen Obiri of Kenya. But Simpson would not let the lead go without a fight, with 100m remaining, Simpson found another gear and kicked to the win in a season’s best time of 4:00.48. Brenda Martinez finished third in a personal best of 4:00.94, with Shannon Rowbury and Gabriele Anderson taking the fourth and fifth spots.

Queen Harrison won a talent-filled field in the women’s 100m hurdles. Harrison powered over the final hurdle to sprint to the win in 12.64. It was a U.S. sweep of the podium as Yvette Lewis was a close second in 12.69, and Kellie Wells was third in 12.70.

In the field events, Christian Taylor had a great series in the men’s triple jump as he led the competition from his very first attempt. Taylor had three of his four legal jumps better than 17 meters. Taylor had his best mark on his second attempt in 17.30m/56-9.25. Brigetta Barrett found equal success in the women’s high jump as she cleared every bar on her first attempt to win the competition in 2.01m/6-7. Barrett continued jumping with the win secured as she attempted the American Record of 2.06m/6-9, but she was unable to clear the bar.

Other Americans to cross the line first included U.S. Champion Duane Solomon who held off a late-charging Pierre-Ambroise Bosse of France to take the win in the men’s 800m in 1:43.72. Justin Gatlin had the fastest time of the day in the men’s 100m as he took the win in 9.94.

Also of note is Shalaya Kipp’s time of 9:37.23 to secure the needed A standard in the women’s steeplechase. Kipp finished fourth in a season best time to punch her ticket to the World Championships in Moscow.
