7/25/2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tia Jones (Marietta, Ga.) established her second national age group and Junior Olympic record for the week bringing the Aggie Stadium crowd to life on the fourth day of the Junior Olympics on the campus of the North Carolina A&T State University.

The Junior Olympic program is a series of meets progressing from preliminary, association, regional and national meets. Athletes compete in two-year age groups ranging from eight and under to 18-years-old.

The free, live online broadcast of the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships lives on USATF.tv. The broadcast began with the opening ceremony and will run through July 28. Coverage of the first two days is available on-demand at USATF.tv. USATF.tv is the home for original programming and on-demand videos of all the 2013 USATF Championships Series, youth and masters events.

Jones, not satisfied with only the 200m hurdles record yesterday, smashed the 100m hurdles record in 13.64 in the preliminary round of the 13-14 girls’ age group. Jones dazzled the crowd as she sprinted across the finish line almost a full second ahead of the next fastest qualifying time. Jones also posted the fourth fastest time in the semi-finals in the 200m dash in 23.81.

Hometown favorite Clayton Wilson (Greensboro, N.C.) claimed victory in the 17-18 men’s 2,000m steeplechase, completing the event in 6:06.66. Fours hours earlier, Wilson participated in the first round of the 1500m finishing 13th in a time of 4:14.69.

Courtney Morgan (Auroa, Ill.) donned gold after putting the shot 14.88m/48-10 in the 13-14 girls’ shot put. Morgan also achieved championship titles in the shot put and discus in June at the Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Morgan rests for a couple of days before returning to take aim at a discus throw title on Sunday. Morgan arrives with the top qualifying mark in the event.

In the 17-18 women’s long jump, Lisa-Anne Barrow (Hyattsville, Md.) and Tierra Williams (Hampton, Ga.) locked horns. Barrow and Williams tied for the longest jump, with each soaring 5.71m/18-09. Barrow won on the tiebreaker, as her second-best jump of 5.64m/18-06 topped Williams’.

Kiana Phelps (Kingsley, Iowa) nudged out a victory in the 15-16 girls’ discus throw. She sent the discus 43.22m/141-09 on her fifth attempt, just five inches ahead of the second-place finisher.

Sean Lee (Rancho Santa Margari, Calif.) came within one centimeter of breaking the Junior Olympic record in the 13-14 boy’s high jump with his highest clearance of 1.93m/6-04. Lee’s triumph occurred as he cleared 1.80m/5-10.75, but he continue to jump all the way up to 1.96m/6-05 which would have been a new national record.

Dylan Gary (Suwanee, Ga.) earned a trip to the top of the awards podium when he launched the javelin 37.09m/121-08 in the 9-10 boys’ mini-javelin throw. Gary bettered the nearest competitor by three and a half meters.
