Coach Robert Addison Poynter

Coach Bobby Poynter is in his 12th year with the West Valley coaching staff, Coach Poynter is a former San Jose State Track Team “Speed City” era sprint athlete…. was the NCAA runner-up in the 100 and 200 meter dashes in 1959. He has been ranked as high as second on the Spartan all-time list in the 200 meters and ran on the 1959 400-meter relay team, which is third all-time. Coach Poynter has been ranked as high as second in the world in 100 and 200 meters. He attended Pasadena High School and won the state championship in the 220 in both his junior and senior years. In 1957 he was the California Community College 220 California state champion.
Coach Poynter earned his BA in Physical Education from San Jose State and earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. From 1969 through 1974 he coached at Silver Creek High School in San Jose where he first coached Millard Hampton. Later, both were reunited as athlete-coach at San Jose City College where Hampton made the 1976 US Olympic Team winning a gold medal (400 meter relay) and silver medal (200 meters). Poynter has coached many fine sprint athletes at San Jose City College including Andre Phillips who later went on to win the 1988 Olympic 400 hurdles gold medal.
“I have had the pleasure of working with many fine sprint athletes at Silver Creek High, San Jose City College, Silver Creek High and West Valley College . . .” stated Coach Poynter. Other coaching products are 16 California State Community College titles, 8 CCS high school individual titles, one state championship and 5 NCAA qualifiers while coaching at San Jose State.
Coach Poynter retired from Silver Creek in 1998 where he was a 3-time recipient of the Teacher of the Year and now continues to help young men and women at West Valley College.• He has been married for 49 years to his wife Gloria, and they have two adult children, son Efferem, daughter Adrienne Baines and two grandchildren Robert & Quincy Poynter.
Coach Poynter has been honored and inducted into three HOF (Hall of Fame), San Jose State, Pasadena City College and African American Ethnic Sports. He has also received recognition from the California Senate, Assembly and Santa Clara County Supervisors for outstanding leadership and dedication of over forty years of service.
