Bethan Knights Wins Roy Griak Invitational
Cal Cross Country Competed In Minnesota and at Stanford Saturday

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – California sophomore Bethan Knights won the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational to pace the Golden Bear men’s and women’s cross country teams in Saturday action.
Knights won the women’s gold division race in a time of 20:54, besting Allie Orstrander of Boise State by 16 seconds to win the meet that is regarded as the premier regular season cross country meet that is held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course and hosted by the University of Minnesota. The win makes Knights, an all-American last season – unbeaten on the year after also winning the season-opening USF Invitational on Sept. 5.
As a team, the Golden Bear women placed fifth with 169 points with Marissa Williams (21:51), Megan Bordes (22:26), Nuria Tio Peig (22:51) and Jordyn Colter (23:06) all scoring for the Bears. It was the first career races for Williams and Colter, a pair of heralded freshmen. Boise State won the women’s race with 37 points, followed by Michigan State, Minnesota and Weber State as Cal rounds out the top five teams.
On the men’s side, Chris Walden again had a solid showing for the Golden Bears, finishing sixth at 25:07 to lead Cal to a third-place team finish with 94 points. All five Golden Bear scorers finished in the top 30 overall with Walden followed by John Lawson (25:22), Leland Later (25:32), Thomas Joyce (25:36) and Robert Brandt (25:39). Michigan State won the men’s race with 74 points, followed by Southern Utah, Cal, Colorado State and Minnesota in the top five.
The Bears next compete at the Sacramento State Cross Country meet on October 3.
