A report released by Running USA found that the number of half-marathon finishers increased by 284 percent since the year 2000. And in the year 2012 there were 1.85 million marathon finishers in the United States.
According to a 2013 article in Runners World magazine, Running USA estimated that charity races raised more than $1.2 billion for nonprofit organizations in 2012 - more than double the amount raised a decade before.
