WILLIAMS THIRD AFTER FIRST DAY

Stanford freshman in contention in Texas Relays decathlon

AUSTIN, Texas – Stanford freshman Harrison Williams stands third in the decathlon after the first day of competition at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Wednesday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Williams, the 2014 U.S. junior national champion and the U.S. high school decathlon record holder, set two personal records and was solid among all five events on the way to scoring 3,992 points. Williams trails only Oklahoma sophomore Thomas Cheval  (4,104) and 2012 Dutch Olympian Ingmar Vos (4,050).

Williams opened with a wind-aided 10.83 clocking in the 100, the fourth-fastest of the day, and followed with long jump of 22-7 on his first attempt. It was a personal wind-legal best, bettering his previous best of 22-4 ¼.

His shot put distance of 39-3 scored 604 points, and Williams followed with a 6-6 ¼ in the high jump, on his final attempt. He opened at 6-0 ½ and was perfect through 6-5, but ended  up taking a grueling 10 jumps.

Still, Williams concluded his day with a personal best 47.99 in the 400 meters, breaking his previous best of 48.11. Williams was the fastest of the competition in that event – by 0.97 of a second – and scored 910 points.

The second day is typically Williams’ best, with his specialties of the 110-meter hurdles and the pole vault upcoming.

Williams was sixth in the IAAF World Junior Championships last year, scoring a personal high of 7,760 points. This is his outdoor collegiate debut and his first decathlon in a Stanford uniform.

The Stanford freshman record is 7,007, set by Jason Goff in 2000.

Among them are Valarie Allman, who ranks No. 3 in the nation is the discus this season (183-4), and Lena Giger, who broke Stanford’s women’s freshman record in the hammer (188-3) in her collegiate debut three weeks ago. She also will put the shot.

Three-time Pac-12 javelin champion and school record-holder Brianna Bain (183-1) makes her season debut and leads a strong Cardinal throwing contingent that also includes Rebecca Hammar in the discus, and Nick Budincich (discus) and Andrew Rondema (javelin) for the Stanford men.
