2010 National Track & Field Hall of Fame inductee James Dunaway passes away at 87

INDIANAPOLIS -- USATF mourns the loss of 2010 National Track and Field Hall of Fame inductee, sportswriter and contributor James “Jim” Dunaway, who passed away Sunday night at the age of 87 in Austin, Texas. Dunaway is survived by his son, David.
A prominent member of the track & field community for more than half a century, Dunaway covered 14 Olympic Games during his 60-plus-year career. He covered every World Track and Field Championships but one, over 50 NCAA Outdoor Championships, and more than 100 indoor and outdoor AAU, TAC, and USATF National Championships.
Dunaway grew up in Houston, and after decades of living in New York City and its New Jersey suburbs, returned to his home state in the final years of his life. A 1949 Penn State University graduate, Dunaway earned a degree in science and worked for General Electric before beginning a career in advertising. It was his love for track & field that sparked his distinguished career in athletics journalism.
His articles on business and sports appeared in The New York Times, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, Signature, The Runner, Runner’s World, Track & Field News, American Track & Field, and many other magazines and newspapers.
Author of the best-selling Track & Field: Running Events from Sports Illustrated, he was twice (1999-2001) and (2005-2007) elected president of the Track and Field Writers of America (TAFWA).
The IAAF described Dunaway as “a doyen of athletics journalism” and there is not a more appropriate phrase to describe him. He will be honored this year at the Penn Relays and Nike Prefontaine Classic, and a press row seat will be left open in his memory at the 2015 USATF Outdoor Championships.
