Mutai, Jeptoo Win 43rd ING NYC Marathon

NEW YORK (November 3, 2013) - With exceptionally high expectaitons for race performance and participant experience, the ING NYC Marathon returned to the streets of this
storied city on Sunday, November 3, and it was a triumphant Sunday or two Kenyan marathoners - Geoffrey Mutai and Priscah Jeptoo

.

With a field of more than 50,000 starters, the ING New York City Marathon drew runners with a wide variety of reasons to run-some to chase personal-best times, some to overcome adversity, and many others to raise funds for charitable causes.

The 2009 champion, American Meb Keflezighi, stopped with acute quadriceps pain-but after a three-minute wait, he continued. "The fans were yelling my name," he said afterward. "I couldn't quit."

Mutai broke the tape for his second straight New York victory in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 24 seconds, more than three minutes off his course record, but remarkable given the 17-mile-per-hour headwinds for most of the race

The Queensboro Bridge became the launching pad for Jeptoo's come-from-behind victory, in which she made up a 3:24 deficit in less than eight miles, rocketing past two early leaders just before mile 24 to win in 2:25:07.

Kenyans Sweep Inaugural EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler

PITTSBURGH (November 3, 2013) - More than 4,000 participants took to the pavement to run the inaugural
EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler. With temperatures in the mid-30s and clear skies, runners crossed four of the city's bridges and weaved in and out of several of the most popular neighborhoods.

With no clear leader in the first three hilly miles, a pack of six elite men emerged to take the helm. Elijah Muturi Karanja, Julius Kogo, Nelson Oyugi, Ruben Limaa, Jon Gray, and
Fernando Cabada clocked 23:35 at the 5-mile mark. The race shaped up at mile eight when Americans Gray and Cabada fell off the lead pack and Kenyans Karanja and Oyugi broke away. Karanja out kicked Oyugi and took the title of champion, setting the race record in 46 minutes, 51 seconds.

Karanja, a late addition to the field, commented that although the course was challenging, he was able to put in a surge the last mile to break away from the pack and take the title.

Cabada was the first American to cross the line in 47:32.

In the women's field, Kenyan Sarah Kiptoo lead the race from wire to wire, taking the title of champion and race record holder in 53:56. Sophy Jepchirchir, of Kenya, Karolina Jarzymska of Poland and Lindsey Scherf of the US lead the chase pack. Jepchirchir took home silver with a time of 54:54 and Jarzymska bronze in 55:15. Scherf, a resident of Chapel Hill, NC was the first American, finishing in 55:55.

JUST RUN Posts Record Numbers

CARMEL, Calif. -- JUST RUN is off and running. The youth fitness program aimed at children 5-12 has been experiencing phenomenal growth in the first two months of the school year. Already, more than 8,300 students from 70 schools in 13 states have been enrolled.

Susan Love, program director, attributes the early rise in the program to several factors. Of major significance is JUST RUN's outreach into Santa Clara County, a largely populated area adjacent to JUST RUN's home county of Monterey. The program, which offers free incentives marking mileage accomplishments within Monterey County, is also providing tokens, wristbands, t-shirts and other items free of charge to the Santa Clara schools.

In addition, the JUST RUN team continues to make presentations and face-to-face contact with school principals, teachers and leaders to explain how to implement the program and the myriad benefits it brings to the children and the classroom setting. These efforts have succeeded in increasing the early sign-ups by 400 percent.
