Santisteban Qualifies For NCAA Cross Country Championships

SACRAMENTO – California junior Kelsey Santisteban placed fifth in the NCAA West Regionals on Friday morning at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 23. The Golden Bear men, paced by senior J.P. Slater, finished 12th as a team and the women placed 13th overall out of 30 schools.

Santisteban completed the 6,000-meter course in 19:29 to finish fifth overall, 18 seconds behind Boise State’s Emma Bates, who captured the individual title. The Golden Bear has now qualified for the NCAA Championships each of her first three collegiate seasons. She placed eighth in last season’s NCAA West Regionals in Seattle.

Sophomore Xochitl Navarrette recorded a time of 20:54 to place 66th overall. Junior Sydney Gray was six seconds back (21:00) in 73rd. Sophomores Mariel Mendoza (21:24) and Ashlyn Dadkhah (21:31) placed 99th and 110th, respectively. Redshirt freshman Molly Babcock (21:56) and redshirt junior Heather Cerney (22:44) finished 144th and 198th, respectively for the Bears out of 225 total competitors in the women’s race.

Slater paced the Cal men, finishing 41st overall with a time of 30:43. Sophomore Leland Later was close behind in 54th with a time of 30:57. Redshirt junior Jordan Locklear placed 60th with a time of 31:08. Sophomore Thomas Joyce was nine seconds behind, placing 67th overall with a time of 31:17. Redshirt freshman Seamus Land (32:34) and redshirt freshman Ned Trim (32:45) placed 128th and 138th, respectively. Freshman Jeff Schaefer (33:00) finished 148th out of 187 competitors.

The NCAA Championships will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Nov. 23. Santisteban has already competed on the course this season, racing at the Pre-Nationals event on Oct. 19. She completed the 6,000-mile course in 20:18.45.
