Region Award Winners for Division III Cross Country Revealed
November 19, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2013 NCAA Division III cross country season were announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as voted on by the Division’s coaches.

Award History

The NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships will be contested November 23 in Hanover, Ind., hosted by Hanover at the L.S. Ayres Complex. The meet will be broadcast live online on NCAA.com.

MEN’S REGIONAL ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Atlantic Region
Nick Marcantonio, SUNY Cortland
Marcantonio, a junior from Glens Falls, N.Y., won the individual title at the Atlantic Region Championships by edging NYU’s Dylan Karten by less than a second. The team race went much the same way as Marcantonio’s SUNY Cortland squad upset NYU for the team crown, 37-62. His season also includes a SUNYAC individual title and a win at the Ronald C. Hoffman Invitational.

Central Region
Eli Horton, Central (Iowa)
Horton, a junior from Runnells, Iowa, claimed the Central Region’s individual title in a time of 24:35.97, completing the 8K course nearly four seconds faster than runner-up Grant Wintheiser of St. Olaf. With the win, Horton paced his team to a runner-up finish and an automatic NCAA championships bid. The win was his first of the season after finishing runner-up to teammate Austin O’Brien at the IIAC Championships.

Great Lakes Region
Paul Lewis, Albion
A senior from Albion, Mich., Lewis earned the individual title at the Great Lakes Region Championships after crossing the line on Calvin’s 8K course in 25:10.09. With the win, he finished nearly five seconds faster than runner-up Dalton Boyer of Wabash. In addition to the regional title, Lewis also won the MIAA individual crown.

Mideast Region
Bobby Over, Allegheny (Pa.)
For the third consecutive year, Over crossed the line at the Mideast Region Championships as the individual winner, this time in 24:28.10 over the 8K course at Muhlenberg. The senior from Wadsworth, Ohio, edged Haverford’s Chris Stadler by just over a second to earn the win — his fourth of the season including a NCAC Championships title.

Midwest Region
John Crain, North Central (Ill.)
Crain, a senior from Dunlap, Ill., was the individual winner at the Midwest Region Championships, completing the 8K course at Augustana (Ill.) in 24:17.15. He finished nearly seven seconds faster than runner-up Wylie Mangelsdorf of Principia to lead his Cardinals to the team title over Washington (Mo.), 56-101. The win was his fifth of the season, including titles at the CCIW Championships, UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational and Notre Dame Invitational (gold race).

Mike LeDuc, Connecticut College
A senior from Canton, Conn., LeDuc emerged from a very deep New England Region as the individual champion with a 24:21.03 performance on the 8K course at Southern Maine. He finished three seconds ahead of runner-up Colin Cotton of Williams and 20 seconds clear of the rest of the field. The win was his fourth in a row, including titles at the Pre-National Invitational and the NESCAC Championships.

John Kieffer, Centre
A senior from Dublin, Ohio, Kieffer has claimed the South/Southeast Region individual title in each of the past three seasons, this time with a 24:32.82 showing on Christopher Newport’s 8K course. The three-time champ was nine seconds faster than runner-up Chad Norton of Guilford. The win was his third of the season, along with an individual title at the SAA Championships.

John Guzman Aguilar, Occidental
Guzman Aguilar, a junior from Upland, Calif., crossed the line in 24:40.27 on Pomona-Pitzer’s 8K course to win the West Region individual title.
He finished 12 seconds ahead of the nearest finisher, runner up Parker Bennett of Willamette to earn his second win of the season. He also claimed the title at the SCIAC Championships and finished runner-up at the Roy Griak Invitational.

Tilton, a senior from Concord, N.H., won the Atlantic Region Individual title with a 21:07.0 clocking on the 6K course at SUNY Geneseo. Her time was more than eight seconds faster than that of runner-up Amy Regan of the Stevens Institute. The win was her fourth of the season, including titles at the Liberty League Championships and the Geneseo Invitational, along with a runner-up finish at the NYSCTC Championships.

A senior from North Branch, Minn., Johnson dominated the field at the Central Region Championships to win her sixth individual title of the season. She completed the 6K course at St. Olaf in 21:10.99 to defeat runner-up Noelle Olson of St. Olaf by nearly 20 seconds. The regional title was added to a list of 2013 accomplishments for Johnson that includes titles at the UMAC Championships, Pre-Nationals and the Roy Griak Invitational.

Just a freshman from Amherst, Ohio, Vince ran away with the individual title at the Great Lakes Regional finishing her home 6K course at Calvin more than 14 seconds faster than the nearest runner. Her time of 21:27.82 was well clear of runner-up Emma Lehmann of Oberlin, leading the Knights to the team title. The win was her third of the season, including a title at the MIAA Championships.

Patrick, a sophomore from Tamaqua, Pa., claimed the individual title at the Mideast Region Championships over 2012 Hannah Oneda of Johns Hopkins. She crossed the line of the 6K course at Muhlenberg in 20:59.90, more than 11 seconds ahead of runner-up Oneda. The win was Patrick’s third of the season, including a MAC individual title.

A junior from Seattle, Wash., Cheadle completed the 6K course at Augustana (Ill.) in 21:31.31 to claim the Midwest Region title. She won by more than six seconds over runner-up Emma Gilbertson of Wheaton (Ill.) to notch her third individual victory of the season. Cheadle also claimed the UAA Championships title and was runner-up at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational.

Kenny, a senior from Glen Rock, N.J., led her Williams squad to the team title at the New England Region Championships with an individual title of her own. She completed Southern Maine’s 6K course in 21:02.18 to defeat runner-up Hannah Zydanowicz of Roger Williams by more than eight seconds. The win was her fourth of the season, including a title at the NESCAC Championships.

Maddie Murphy, Trinity (Texas)
A senior from Friendswood, Texas, Murphy was the resounding winner in the South/Southeast Region with a 25 second victory over teammate Vanessa Moreno. She navigated the 6K course at Christopher Newport in 21:33.89 to win by nearly half a minute over her teammate and by nearly 45 seconds over the next-fastest runner. The win was her second of the season, along with a title at the SCAC Championships.

Freeby, a junior from Milwaukie, Ore., claimed the West Region individual title with an 11-second victory over Cal Lutheran’s Melissa Skiba. She crossed the line on Pomona-Pizter’s 6K course in 21:37.66 for her fourth win of the season. In addition to her regional title, Freeby also won the NWC meet and finished third at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational.

MEN’S REGIONAL COACHES OF THE YEAR
Atlantic Region
Steve Patrick, SUNY Cortland

Patrick, in his sixth season at the helm of SUNY Cortland’s program, led the Red Dragons to an upset of top-10 rival NYU for the Atlantic Region title, 37-62. Behind individual winner Nick Marcantonio, Cortland put all five scorers across the line among the top 15 individual finishers. Patrick’s squad won the SUNYAC Championships with seven of the top 11 finishers.

Central Region
Phil Lundin, St. Olaf

Now in his sixth season guiding the St. Olaf program, Lundin led the Oles to a team title at the Central Region Championships over Central (Iowa), 51-61. Individual runner-up Grant Wintheiser led three finishers in the top six and seven total top-25 runners en route to the win. The region title added to a list of 2013 accomplishments for Lundin’s squad that includes a MIAC Championship and a win at the UW-La Crosse Jim Drews Invitational.

Roger Busch, Wabash

Busch, the coach of Wabash for the past eight seasons, guided his Little Giants to the Great Lakes Region team title over Calvin, 60-79, to snap the longest active region championship streak in NCAA cross country. Individual runner-up Dalton Boyer led all five Wabash scorers to top-20 finishes to bring Calvin’s streak to an end. His team also claimed the title at the NCAC Championships.

Mideast Region
Bobby Van Allen, Johns Hopkins

In his 15th year in charge of the Johns Hopkins program, Van Allen led the Blue Jays to the Mideast Region title over Dickinson, 62-88. His squad was the lone team in the field with three top-10 finishers, led by seventh-place Max Robinson. The region title for Van Allen’s unit came on the heels of a Centennial Conference title two weeks earlier.

Midwest Region
Al Carius, North Central (Ill.)

Carius, who has been the head coach for North Central (Ill.) for 48 years, added another Midwest Region title to his resume as his Cardinals defeated Washington (Mo.), 56-101. Individual champion John Crain led five top-20 finishers, while no other team had more than two. Among the many other team titles his Cardinals — ranked No. 1 nationally all season — won this year were wins at the CCIW Championships and the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational, along with a runner-up finish in the gold race at the Notre Dame Invitational.

Now in his 35th year in charge of the Williams program, Farwell and his Ephs emerged victorious in a narrow, 77-78, team victory over NESCAC rival Middlebury. Williams earned two of the top three individual positions with runner-up Colin Cotton and third-place Chris Lee. Farwell’s team also claimed the NESCAC Championships title and was the highest-finishing DIII team at the Lehigh Paul Short Run.

Brian Flynn, Bridgewater (Va.)

Flynn, in his fourth season at the helm at Bridgewater (Va.), led the Eagles to the South/Southeast Region Championships team title over Emory, 74-91. Fourth-place Luke Sohl was the top finisher among a scoring five for Flynn’s Eagles who all recorded top-25 places. Flynn and the Eagles were team champions in the ODAC two weeks earlier.

Tony Boston, Pomona-Pitzer

Now in his sixth season guiding the Pomona-Pitzer men, Boston led them to the team title at the West Region Championships over in-city rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 71-78. Fourth-place Benjamin Girodias and fifth-place John Fowler led the way for Boston’s squad, which was the only one in the field with three top-15 finishers. The regional result was the reverse of the SCIAC Championships two weeks prior, where Pomona-Pitzer was runner-up by just six points.

WOMEN’S REGIONAL COACHES OF THE YEAR
Atlantic Region
Nick McDonough, NYU

McDonough, in his seventh season as the coach at NYU, guided his team to a 97-103 victory over St. Lawrence to win the Atlantic Region team title. His squad was the sole team in the field with four top-20 finishers, led by ninth-place Emily Cousens. The team also finished runner-up at the UAA Championships.

Now in his 25th season guiding the Wartburg cross country program, Johnson led his Knights squad to a Central Region team title over Carleton, 86-104. Led by sixth-place Sammi Bruett and seventh-place Haddie Vawter, all five scorers for Wartburg finished in the top 35. In addition to the region crown, the Knights also won their races at the Roy Griak Invitational, the UW-La Crosse Tori Neubauer Invitational and the IIAC Championships.

Great Lakes Region
Brian Diemer, Calvin

In his eighth season leading the Calvin Knights, Diemer guided his team to a decisive team title at the Great Lakes Regional Championships over Oberlin and Hope, 54-104-105. Freshman Cassie Vince paced the Knights to the title with the individual win, while three others raced to top-15 finishes. Two weeks prior, Diemer’s Knights also claimed the MIAA Championships title.

Mideast Region
Kevin Borrelli, Marywood

Borrelli, now in his sixth season in charge of the Marywood program, will be the coach of the program’s first-ever NCAA Cross Country Championships team after the Pacers earned an at-large bid with its third-place showing at the Mideast Region Championships. Seventh-place Diana D’Achille led three Pacers in the top 25. The NCAA at-large bid came on the heels of his squad posting a perfect score of 15 to win the CSAC Championships title.

Chris Hall, Chicago

Hall, who is in his 13th season as the coach at Chicago, guided the Maroons to the Midwest Region team title in convincing fashion over UW-La Crosse, 60-101. All five Chicago scoring runners finished in the top 20, led by third-place finisher Catherine Young. Hall’s Maroons squad won the UAA Championships two weeks prior to its Midwest Region title.

In his 14th year of coaching the women’s squad at Williams, Farwell led the Ephs to a team victory in the New England Region over Middlebury, 44-57. Individual winner Kaleigh Kenny led four Williams runners in the top 10. Two weeks earlier, Farwell’s Williams women finished runner-up at the NESCAC Championships.

Derick Lawrence, Trinity (Texas)

In dominant fashion, the South/Southeast Region Championship team title went to Derick Lawrence and his Trinity (Texas) women, 36-76, over runner-up Emory. Lawrence, in his second season coaching the Trinity women, guided Maddie Murphy to the individual win and two others to top-four finishes. All five scorers finished among the top 15 for the Lawrence and the Tigers, who won the SCAC Championship and the Pre-National Invitational earlier this season.

Third-place Sara Mostatabi led three top-10 finishers and five in the top 25 for the Athenas. Two weeks prior, Goldhammer and his CMS squad claimed the SCIAC Championships title.

For the third consecutive year, Over crossed the line at the Mideast Region Championships as the individual winner, this time in 24:28.10 over the 8K course at Muhlenberg. The senior from Wadsworth, Ohio, edged Haverford’s Chris Stadler by just over a second to earn the win — his fourth of the season including a NCAC Championships title.

Midwest Region
John Crain, North Central (Ill.)
Crain, a senior from Dunlap, Ill., was the individual winner at the Midwest Region Championships, completing the 8K course at Augustana (Ill.) in 24:17.15. He finished nearly seven seconds faster than runner-up Wylie Mangelsdorf of Principia to lead his Cardinals to the team title over Washington (Mo.), 56-101. The win was his fifth of the season, including titles at the CCIW Championships, UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational and Notre Dame Invitational (gold race).

Mike LeDuc, Connecticut College
A senior from Canton, Conn., LeDuc emerged from a very deep New England Region as the individual champion with a 24:21.03 performance on the 8K course at Southern Maine. He finished three seconds ahead of runner-up Colin Cotton of Williams and 20 seconds clear of the rest of the field. The win was his fourth in a row, including titles at the Pre-National Invitational and the NESCAC Championships.

John Kieffer, Centre
A senior from Dublin, Ohio, Kieffer has claimed the South/Southeast Region individual title in each of the past three seasons, this time with a 24:32.82 showing on Christopher Newport’s 8K course. The three-time champ was nine seconds faster than runner-up Chad Norton of Guilford. The win was his third of the season, along with an individual title at the SAA Championships.

Guzman Aguilar, a junior from Upland, Calif., crossed the line in 24:40.27 on Pomona-Pitzer’s 8K course to win the West Region individual title. He finished 12 seconds ahead of the nearest finisher, runner0up Parker Bennett of Willamette to earn his second win of the season. He also claimed the title at the SCIAC Championships and finished runner-up at the Roy Griak Invitational.

WOMEN’S REGIONAL ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Atlantic Region
Grace Tilton, RPI
Tilton, a senior from Concord, N.H., won the Atlantic Region Individual title with a 21:07.0 clocking on the 6K course at SUNY Geneseo. Her time was more than eight seconds faster than that of runner-up Amy Regan of the Stevens Institute. The win was her fourth of the season, including titles at the Liberty League Championships and the Geneseo Invitational, along with a runner-up finish at the NYSCTC Championships.

Chelsea Johnson, St. Scholastica
A senior from North Branch, Minn., Johnson dominated the field at the Central Region Championships to win her sixth individual title of the season. She completed the 6K course at St. Olaf in 21:10.99 to defeat runner-up Noelle Olson of St. Olaf by nearly 20 seconds. The regional title was added to a list of 2013 accomplishments for Johnson that includes titles at the UMAC Championships, Pre-Nationals and the Roy Griak Invitational.

Cassie Vince, Calvin
Just a freshman from Amherst, Ohio, Vince ran away with the individual title at the Great Lakes Regional finishing her home 6K course at Calvin more than 14 seconds faster than the nearest runner. Her time of 21:27.82 was well clear of runner-up Emma Lehmann of Oberlin, leading the Knights to the team title. The win was her third of the season, including a title at the MIAA Championships.

Patrick, a sophomore from Tamaqua, Pa., claimed the individual title at the Mideast Region Championships over 2012 Hannah Oneda of Johns Hopkins. She crossed the line of the 6K course at Muhlenberg in 20:59.90, more than 11 seconds ahead of runner-up Oneda. The win was Patrick’s third of the season, including a MAC individual title.

A junior from Seattle, Wash., Cheadle completed the 6K course at Augustana (Ill.) in 21:31.31 to claim the Midwest Region title. She won by more than six seconds over runner-up Emma Gilbertson of Wheaton (Ill.) to notch her third individual victory of the season. Cheadle also claimed the UAA Championships title and was runner-up at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational.

Kenny, a senior from Glen Rock, N.J., led her Williams squad to the team title at the New England Region Championships with an individual title of her own. She completed Southern Maine’s 6K course in 21:02.18 to defeat runner-up Hannah Zydanowicz of Roger Williams by more than eight seconds. The win was her fourth of the season, including a title at the NESCAC Championships.

Maddie Murphy, Trinity (Texas)
A senior from Friendswood, Texas, Murphy was the resounding winner in the South/Southeast Region with a 25 second victory over teammate Vanessa Moreno. She navigated the 6K course at Christopher Newport in 21:33.89 to win by nearly half a minute over her teammate and by nearly 45 seconds over the next-fastest runner. The win was her second of the season, along with a title at the SCAC Championships.

Freeby, a junior from Milwaukie, Ore., claimed the West Region individual title with an 11-second victory over Cal Lutheran’s Melissa Skiba. She crossed the line on Pomona-Pizter’s 6K course in 21:37.66 for her fourth win of the season. In addition to her regional title, Freeby also won the NWC meet and finished third at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational.

MEN’S REGIONAL COACHES OF THE YEAR
Atlantic Region
Steve Patrick, SUNY Cortland

Patrick, in his sixth season at the helm of SUNY Cortland’s program, led the Red Dragons to an upset of top-10 rival NYU for the Atlantic Region title, 37-62. Behind individual winner Nick Marcantonio, Cortland put all five scorers across the line among the top 15 individual finishers. Patrick’s squad won the SUNYAC Championships with seven of the top 11 finishers.

Central Region
Phil Lundin, St. Olaf

Now in his sixth season guiding the St. Olaf program, Lundin led the Oles to a team title at the Central Region Championships over Central (Iowa), 51-61. Individual runner-up Grant Wintheiser led three finishers in the top six and seven total top-25 runners en route to the win. The region title added to a list of 2013 accomplishments for Lundin’s squad that includes a MIAC Championship and a win at the UW-La Crosse Jim Drews Invitational.

Great Lakes Region
Roger Busch, Wabash

Busch, the coach of Wabash for the past eight seasons, guided his Little Giants to the Great Lakes Region team title over Calvin, 60-79, to snap the longest active region championship streak in NCAA cross country. Individual runner-up Dalton Boyer led all five Wabash scorers to top-20 finishes to bring Calvin’s streak to an end. His team also claimed the title at the NCAC Championships.

Mideast Region
Bobby Van Allen, Johns Hopkins

In his 15th year in charge of the Johns Hopkins program, Van Allen led the Blue Jays to the Mideast Region title over Dickinson, 62-88. His squad was the lone team in the field with three top-10 finishers, led by seventh-place Max Robinson. The region title for Van Allen’s unit came on the heels of a Centennial Conference title two weeks earlier.

Midwest Region
Al Carius, North Central (Ill.)

Carius, who has been the head coach for North Central (Ill.) for 48 years, added another Midwest Region title to his resume as his Cardinals defeated Washington (Mo.), 56-101. Individual champion John Crain led five top-20 finishers, while no other team had more than two. Among the many other team titles his Cardinals — ranked No. 1 nationally all season — won this year were wins at the CCIW Championships and the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational, along with a runner-up finish in the gold race at the Notre Dame Invitational.

Peter Farwell, Williams

Now in his 35th year in charge of the Williams program, Farwell and his Ephs emerged victorious in a narrow, 77-78, team victory over NESCAC rival Middlebury. Williams earned two of the top three individual positions with runner-up Colin Cotton and third-place Chris Lee. Farwell’s team also claimed the NESCAC Championships title and was the highest-finishing DIII team at the Lehigh Paul Short Run.

Brian Flynn, Bridgewater (Va.)

Flynn, in his fourth season at the helm at Bridgewater (Va.), led the Eagles to the South/Southeast Region Championships team title over Emory, 74-91. Fourth-place Luke Sohl was the top finisher among a scoring five for Flynn’s Eagles who all recorded top-25 places. Flynn and the Eagles were team champions in the ODAC two weeks earlier.

Tony Boston, Pomona-Pitzer

Now in his sixth season guiding the Pomona-Pitzer men, Boston led them to the team title at the West Region Championships over in-city rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 71-78. Fourth-place Benjamin Girodias and fifth-place John Fowler led the way for Boston’s squad, which was the only one in the field with three top-15 finishers. The regional result was the reverse of the SCIAC Championships two weeks prior, where Pomona-Pitzer was runner-up by just six points.

WOMEN’S REGIONAL COACHES OF THE YEAR
Atlantic Region
Nick McDonough, NYU

McDonough, in his seventh season as the coach at NYU, guided his team to a 97-103 victory over St. Lawrence to win the Atlantic Region team title. His squad was the sole team in the field with four top-20 finishers, led by ninth-place Emily Cousens. The team also finished runner-up at the UAA Championships.

Now in his 25th season guiding the Wartburg cross country program, Johnson led his Knights squad to a Central Region team title over Carleton, 86-104. Led by sixth-place Sammi Bruett and seventh-place Haddie Vawter, all five scorers for Wartburg finished in the top 35. In addition to the region crown, the Knights also won their races at the Roy Griak Invitational, the UW-La Crosse Tori Neubauer Invitational and the IIAC Championships.

Brian Diemer, Calvin

In his eighth season leading the Calvin Knights, Diemer guided his team to a decisive team title at the Great Lakes Regional Championships over Oberlin and Hope, 54-104-105. Freshman Cassie Vince paced the Knights to the title with the individual win, while three others raced to top-15 finishes. Two weeks prior, Diemer’s Knights also claimed the MIAA Championships title.

Kevin Borrelli, Marywood

Borrelli, now in his sixth season in charge of the Marywood program, will be the coach of the program’s first-ever NCAA Cross Country Championships team after the Pacers earned an at-large bid with its third-place showing at the Mideast Region Championships. Seventh-place Diana D’Achille led three Pacers in the top 25. The NCAA at-large bid came on the heels of his squad posting a perfect score of 15 to win the CSAC Championships title.

Hall, who is in his 13th season as the coach at Chicago, guided the Maroons to the Midwest Region team title in convincing fashion over UW-La Crosse, 60-101. All five Chicago scoring runners finished in the top 20, led by third-place finisher Catherine Young. Hall’s Maroons squad won the UAA Championships two weeks prior to its Midwest Region title.

In his 14th year of coaching the women’s squad at Williams, Farwell led the Ephs to a team victory in the New England Region over Middlebury, 44-57. Individual winner Kaleigh Kenny led four Williams runners in the top 10. Two weeks earlier, Farwell’s Williams women finished runner-up at the NESCAC Championships.

Derick Lawrence, Trinity (Texas)

In dominant fashion, the South/Southeast Region Championship team title went to Derick Lawrence and his Trinity (Texas) women, 36-76, over runner-up Emory. Lawrence, in his second season coaching the Trinity women, guided Maddie Murphy to the individual win and two others to top-four finishes. All five scorers finished among the top 15 for the Lawrence and the Tigers, who won the SCAC Championship and the Pre-National Invitational earlier this season.

Goldhammer, who has coached the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women for 30 years, led the Athenas to the West Region Championships team title over Willamette, 62-81. Third-place Sara Mostatabi led three top-10 finishers and five in the top 25 for the Athenas. Two weeks prior, Goldhammer and his CMS squad claimed the SCIAC Championships title.
