New Champions Emerge at XTERRA Trail Run Worlds KUALOA RANCH, Oahu, Hawaii (November 24, 2013) - Patrick Smyth (right) found his way in the sport of trail running, and Polina Babkina found her way at Kualoa Ranch. As a result, both ran away as the new champions of the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship. More than 2,000 runners from 12 countries and 36 states participated in the event on an "Aloha from Hawaii" postcard-type of day at Kualoa Ranch. Smyth, who resides in Salt Lake City, Utah, was the overall winner, competing the 21-kilometer championship course in 1 hour, 16 minutes, 38 seconds. It was his first appearance at the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Hawaii, and it came just two months after he burst onto the trail running scene with a victory at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship in his home state of Utah. Babkina, who is originally from Russia but now resides in Honolulu, was the first overall female, with a time of 1:37:24. It was sweet redemption for Babkina, who was leading the race last year until she took a wrong turn and eventually finished third. (right), pulled away from Andrew Duncan of Las Vegas over the final mile to win the race in 2 hours 35 minutes and 26 seconds. The 46-year-old Duncan finished 10 seconds back to the raucous cheers of the large crowds assembled on Las Vegas Boulevard. "I'm a track runner. I knew the closer and closer we got to the finish, the more it was my race," Brosseau said afterward. "I had a kick and went for it with one mile to go." Yon Yilma, 25, of Edmonds, Wash., led most of the way, passing halfway in 1:13:29 and 20 miles in 1:55:45 before the wheels fell off. Brosseau and Duncan, who were running together at 20 miles (1:58:27) caught a fading Yilma at mile 23 and battled back and forth the rest of the way to the finish line. Michael Wardian, 39, of Arlington, Va., who won the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon on Sunday morning in 2:31:19, ran 2:57:56 to finish tenth in Las Vegas. Wardian, who hopped on a plane immediately after the San Antonio race, went through halfway in 1:18:23 before the day's tall task took its toll on his legs. Elite athletes representing five countries will toe the starting line including a half dozen current and former Olympians, 10 women with 5K personal bests under 15:30 (5-minutes per mile pace), and nine men with personal bests under 13:45 (4:26 per mile pace). Lightning fast times are expected in the elite races, bolstering the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot's reputation as a global standout that showcases top athletic talent. The Association of Road Race Statisticians ranked the elite men's race at the Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot among the four most competitive road 5Ks in the world for the past three years. The elite women's race at the Turkey Trot was ranked as the ninth most competitive in the world in 2012. "About five years ago the idea came to mind that there was a need to create additional competitive and social opportunities for college students who enjoy running," said Taylor. "Given restrictions placed on college coaches with roster limits as well as the elimination of track & field programs at the college level, there was a need for action to increase opportunity. In January 2012, when the NCAA passed legislation that allowed NCAA DI athletes to accept prize money to cover actual and necessary expenses for participation in their individual sport over a full calendar year, I decided the timing was right and that we needed to make this happen." What happened was the formation of a new non profit, the Collegiate Running Association. Founded by Taylor along with Jon Molz, assistant women's track & field coach at the University of Richmond, the Association was introduced to the public on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. A total of nine male runners finished under 1:05 this year after a total of only 13 runners breaking 1:05 in the past six years combined. A prize purse of $17,850, the largest half marathon purse in the western U.S., was distributed between the top eight male and female and top three masters' runners. Overall, 7,200 runners crossed the finish line under perfect race conditions. A thin cloud cover, windless skies and temperatures in the low-50's at the start helped hundreds run personal records along the rolling course that mostly tours the scenic and historic coastlines of Monterey and Pacific Grove. In the elite competition, the first mile of the race saw a pack of 14 runners take the lead, including Kiptoo, a very fast woman among the elite men. They reached the one mile mark in 4:53 with last year's champion Ben Bruce in front. At mile two, a five-man pack emerged including Uyogi and Chemtai, fellow Kenyans Geofrey Terer and Benson Cheruiyot, and Californian Fernando Cabada. New Champions Emerge at XTERRA Trail Run Worlds

Brosseau Victorious at Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS - The finish of the men's race at the
Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon was the most exciting show in town on Sunday night, Nov. 17, as 28-year-old

AmeriKenyans Dominate at Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay



MONTEREY BAY, Calif. (Nov. 17, 2013) - Members of the AmeriKenyan Running Club dominated the top spots at the
