Division II USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Americans for 2013 Announced

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday the 80 student-athletes who earned All-America honors by finishing among the top 40 of the 2013 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships men’s and women’s races.

In defending their national title from 2012, the 2013 NCAA Division II women’s champion Grand Valley State Lakers placed six individuals on the USTFCCCA All-America list — the most of any NCAA program this year regardless of division or gender — while the Adams State men, led by individual champion junior Tabor Stevens, earned five All-America nods en route to winning its fifth national title in the past six seasons.

Led by third-place junior Allyson Winchester, ninth-place sophomore Jessica Janecke and 11th-place freshman Kendra Foley, the Lakers posted a team score of 54 — the lowest by a women’s DII champion since Adams State posted the same score in 2005 –to Adams State’s 91. Rounding out the honorees for GVSU were senior Courtney Brewis (17th), junior Hannah Osborn (31st) and sophomore Jordan Chester (40th) The Lakers nearly put all seven runners on the All-America list, as their seventh crossed the line in 48th.

Runner-up Adams State was represented on the All-America list by four honorees. Third-place Western State, fourth-place Alaska Anchorage rounded out the podium with a pair of All-Americans each. Fifth-place Augustana (S.D.), seventh-place Simon Fraser, eighth-place Metro State, ninth-place Mansfield and 23rd-place Bentley also earned two All-America plaudits apiece.

Individual champ Tabor Stevens paced the Adams State men to the team title and five All-America selections as the Grizzlies took down Grand Valley State, 54-104. Senior Jovanny Godinez (10th), sophomore Kevin Batt (12th), sophomore Kyle Masterson (18th) and senior Naseem Haje (30th) also made the list of All-America honorees, with their sixth runner finished just outside the top-40 cutoff in 46th.

GVSU earned four All-America nods as the runner-up, while third-place Augustana (S.D.), fifth-place Colorado Mines and seventh-place Alaska Anchorage each put three on the list.

Fourth-place Western State, sixth-place Chico State, 13th-place Metro State and 18th-place Sioux Fall State were all represented by pairs of All-Americans.

Led by the Adams State men’s five honorees, the RMAC led all conferences in the NCAA in representation, regardless of division or gender, with a total 13 honorees. Western State sophomore Vegard Olstad was runner-up to Stevens, while Colorado Mines’ trio of senior Andrew Epperson (13th) and juniors Derek Alcorn (33rd) and Phil Schneider (34th) earned All-America honors for the second straight season. Metro State’s junior Nick Kadlec (20th) and senior Kirk Harvey (27th) and Black Hills State senior Mitch Kraft (29th) rounded out the list for the RMAC.

Next in line was the GLIAC and NSIC with five apiece.

GVSU’s six honorees boosted the GLIAC to a women’s best 10 total All-America nods. Ferris State senior Samantha Johnson finished fifth to join GVSU’s Winchester and Janecke in the top 10. Saginaw Valley State junior Emily Short (18th), first-year Ashland runner Delainey Phelps (25th) and Malone senior Tina Oprean (38th) rounded out the conference’s All-Americans.

The RMAC was represented by eight honorees, while the GNAC had six and individual champion senior Jennifer Agnew of U-Mary headlined the NSIC’s five All-Americans.

National Athletes and Coaches of the Year will be announced Tuesday.
