The Warm-Up Lap: Collegiate Track & Field News and Notes

May 17, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – With the exception of one final round of "Last Chance" meets in Division III, the regular season of collegiate track & field has come to a close and the focus has shifted toward the National Championship meets.

Championships Info: Division I | Division II | Division III
Weekend Info: Schedule | Broadcast Schedule

Division I and II teams are off this weekend as they await East/West Preliminary Rounds and the NCAA DII Championships, respectively. The qualifying window for both division ended Sunday, but student-athletes are able to compete — see Colorado’s Emma Coburn and Simon Fraser’s Helen Crofts at Friday’s Oxy High Performance Meet — for times that will not count toward qualification but could count toward in-season collegiate/division records.

The list of accepted entries into the NCAA DI East and West Preliminary Rounds was posted Thursday, and can be found here. The NCAA Championship fields for the combined events have also been announced. Start lists will be published Tuesday, May 21 by 2 p.m. ET.

The East Prelims will be held in Greensboro, N.C., while Austin, Texas, will host the West Prelims. Both meets will take place May 23-25. The top 12 finishers in each individual event and relay event at both Prelims sites will advance to the NCAA Championships Finals June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. Each event contested at the NCAA Finals will have no more than 24 competitors.

Accepted entries into the DII Championships — to be contested May 23-25 at CSU-Pueblo — were announced Tuesday for both the men’s and women’s fields. The men’s list can be viewed here, and the women’s here. Heat sheets will be available Monday, May 20.

Meanwhile Division III teams may get one last shot at jockeying for qualification to the DIII Championships — which will take place May 23-25 at UW-La Crosse — through today between three meets.

North Central (Ill.) – Multi-Event, May 14-15; Gregory Invitational, May 16-17
George Fox – GFU Final Qualifier, May 16-17
Augustana College (Ill.) – Augustana Twilight, May 17
Teams were also able to compete at Ohio Wesleyan, Swarthmore, Whitworth and UW-La Crosse earlier in the week.

Each individual event will be contested by 20 student-athletes, while 16 teams will compete in each relay event. Accepted entries will be posted by 9 a.m. ET on Sunday.

With the top DIII qualifying times at 100 meters already to his name, UW-Eau Claire sprinter/DB Thurgood Dennis claimed the division’s second-fastest time at 400 meters in 47.10 — also good for second among football players.

Houston senior Isaiah Sweeney claimed the Conference-USA long jumple title with a mark of 25-5.1/2 (7.76m) to put him first among football players and No. 18 in Division I. Sweeney, a wide receiver for the Cougars, is healthy again after injuries limited him to just one game in 2012 — though he racked up 93 yards and a touchdown in his only game.

Senior Kyler Martin of Army posted the best 110 hudles time by a football player this season with a 14.00 (+1.2m/s) at the IC4A/ECAC Championships. His was the second-fastest qualifying time, and he finished sixth in the finals (14.20, -1.0m/s). A defensive back for the Black Knights, Martin recorded six tackles and proke up a pair of passes last season.

Martin’s Army teammate Jacob Drozd — a linebacker for the Black Knights — also had a strong performance at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, finishing third in the javelin with a mark of 222-10 (67.93m).
