Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Records Fastest Marathon Times in More than a Decade

CLEVELAND (May 19, 2013) - The 2013 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon weekend opened with a sun-splashed Saturday morning at FirstEnergy Stadium and ended Sunday with a pair of blazing fast times in the men's and women's marathons.
The 36th edition event included a 10K, half-marathon and full marathon on Sunday and a 5K and Kids' Run events on Saturday.

"We're very pleased with the great times we saw from the runners today," said Executive Race Director Jack Staph. "We are excited to see that our numbers are continuing to climb in terms of participants and spectators and we're proud of the fact the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon continues to attract so many elite runners from the United States and around the world to our city."

The 5K on Saturday drew 1,300 runners who were able to finish on the field at FirstEnergy Stadium. In addition, almost 1,000 children 12 and under participated in the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Red Nose Children's Run on the home field of the Cleveland Browns.

"This race showcases the best Cleveland has to offer the thousands of people who come out on Sunday to run, walk or cheer," said Staph. "They're in a great city, running a flat, fast course, and it seems more and more people are enjoying their own 'Cleveland Experience' each and every year."

Philemon Terer, a 27-year-old runner from Kenya, was the first to cross the marathon finish line with a time of 2 hours, 17 minutes, 37 seconds. Terer began pulling away from the other runners a little more than a mile from the finish line, though he spent most of the race alongside Tesfaye Dube.

Dube, of Ethiopia, came in second with a time of 2:18:10, followed by 34-year-old Geofrey Kiprotich, also from Kenya, at 2:19:41.

Among the women, Sarah Kiptoo, 23, of Kenya took first with a time of 2:33:42. The women's marathon winner from 2012, Mary Akor, 36, finished second with a time of 2:36:03. She was followed by Joanna Johnson, 24, of Oberlin, Ohio who finished in 2:48:43. Alana Hadley, the 16-year-old star runner from Charlotte, N.C., finished in 2:58:23 in her marathon debut.

Kim Smith Sets Women's Course Record at 2013 Brooklyn Half

NEW YORK - "Is Brooklyn in the house?" asked Brooklyn Councilwoman
Letitia James as more than 20,000 runners massed on Eastern Parkway for the start of the Brooklyn Half on Saturday, May 18. The reply was a loud cheer that said it all. The Brooklyn Half isn't new-it's been run every year since 1981-but with a three-day Brooklyn Half Pre-Party presented by New Balance in ultra-hip Dumbo, a start in two waves, and a record finisher field of 21,378, this year's race felt like something altogether different.

Locals and visitors alike raved about the course, which started in front of the Brooklyn Museum and made its way around Grand Army Plaza, through Prospect Park, down Ocean Parkway, and onto Surf Avenue before finishing on the Coney Island boardwalk. The route is largely flat, which makes it ideal for running personal records.

The cool, overcast weather also contributed to fast running, and it was no surprise to see excellent times notched by the top finishers. Representing race sponsor New Balance, New Zealand Olympian Kim Smith set a women's event record of one hour, 11 minutes, 24 seconds, demolishing the old mark, 1:13:15, which had stood since 1986. Hirut Beyene Guangul of West Side Runners (WSX) followed in 1:14:31 and Liz Costello was a close third in 1:14:40. Men's winner Tesfaye Girma, also of WSX, ran 1:06:03, a time that didn't threaten the 1:03:18 event record he set here last year.

Gruca to Defend Masters Win at 35th Freihofer's Run for Women

ALBANY, NY- Dorota Gruca (Las Cruces, NM) will be looking to earn back-to-back Freihofer's Run for Women 5K masters titles when she headlines another strong field at the 35th anniversary edition of the Freihofer's Run for Women 5K on Saturday, June 1st in Albany, New York.

The 43-year-old Polish long-distance runner, who finished 30th in the marathon at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, is off to a convincing start in 2013. She earned a repeat victory in the Carlsbad 5000 female masters race (16:40) and improved on her 2012 performance at the Phoenix Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon by more than two and a half minutes, completing the 13.1-mile course in 1:15:56 for a strong 2nd place finish.

Hoping to block Gruca's path to the podium will be Sheri Piers (Falmouth, ME), 41, who is trained by three-time Australian Olympian and Freihofer's Run for Women champion Benita Willis. At last year's Freihofer's, Piers and Gruca traded the lead several times until the event's dramatic downhill conclusion along Madison Avenue. In that nail biting finish, Gruca relied upon her extensive track experience (she's a three-time national champion in the women's 5,000m and finished 13th at the 2005 World Championships) to outpace her rival.

Fellow Mainer and running icon Joan Benoit Samuelson (Freeport, ME), the first gold medalist for the inaugural women's Olympic Marathon at the Los Angeles Games, will join Piers on the starting line. Samuelson, 55, who was inducted into the Running USA Hall of Champions
in 2012 and remains an inspiration for runners and athletes of all ages, set a US 55-59 age group record at last month's Boston Marathon (2:50:29).

Boston Runners Unable to Finish 2013 Race Invited to Register for 2014 Boston Marathon

B.A.A. issues special invitation to 2013 Boston Marathon starters who did not cross Boylston Street finish line

BOSTON -
The B.A.A., organizer of the
Boston Marathon, is issuing an invitation to participate in the 2014 Boston Marathon to official entrants in the 2013 Boston Marathon who were unable to cross the Boylston Street finish line. More than 5000 official starters were affected on Monday, April 15 at the 117th Boston Marathon when the race was stopped at 2:50 p.m. ET.

"The opportunity to run down Boylston Street and to cross the finish line amid thousands of spectators is a significant part of the entire Boston Marathon experience," said Tom Grilk, B.A.A. Executive Director.

"With the opportunity to return and participate in 2014, we look forward to inviting back these athletes and we expect that most will renew their marathon training commitment. Boston spectators are known for their impassioned support and unbridled enthusiasm, and they will give these returning athletes some of the loudest cheers at next year's race. We want to thank our participants for their patience as we continue to work through the details of arranging this accommodation for them, and we ask for continued patience from the running community as we plan the 2014 Boston Marathon next April."

To be eligible, a 2013 Boston Marathon participant must have been an official entrant who started the race and who reached the half marathon mark in this year's race on Monday, April 15. Registration for the 2014 Boston Marathon is scheduled to occur in September, and 2013 Boston Marathon participants who were unable to cross the finish line on Boylston Street will receive a non-transferable unique code in early August to be used for entry. An applicant's entry will be guaranteed only during a designated registration period. Participants will be required to pay an entry fee, which has yet to be determined.

The B.A.A. has communicated by email to the participants in this year's race who are eligible. Among the 5633 in this group are 2611 from Massachusetts and 726 who are international. In total, residents of 54 states and 47 countries are among this group. Also, the group is comprised of 2983 women and 2650 men and ages range from 18 to 82.

No decision has been made on the maximum field size for the 2014 Boston Marathon, including the number of qualifiers and invitational applications available. The B.A.A. will work with many partners, including public safety officials, before determining changes, if necessary, to the event and the race.
