World Championship Medalists Headline 2013 UAE Healthy Kidney 10K
NEW YORK CITY - Kenya's
Leonard Patrick Komon, the 10K world record-holder, and
Edwin Soi, the 2008 Olympic 5000-meter bronze medalist, will face off against three-time IAAF World Championships medalist
Moses Kipsiro of Uganda and IAAF World Cross Country Championship team bronze medalist
Abera Kuma of Ethiopia in the 2013
UAE Healthy Kidney 10K on Saturday, May 11, it was announced by New York Road Runners president and CEO
Mary Wittenberg. This race will mark the comeback for American distance star Meb Keflezighi, who suffered from a calf injury throughout the 2013 spring season.
Held over Central Park's rolling hills, the race is sponsored by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates and benefits the
National Kidney Foundation. The runners will compete for a $25,000 first-place prize and the $30,000 Zayed bonus, which is awarded to the race winner if he breaks the existing Central Park course record of 27:35, set by Komon in 2011. The bonus was named after the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the race's honoree and the first president of the United Arab Emirates, who was treated for kidney disease in the United States and benefited from the expertise, knowledge, and professionalism of U.S. medical institutions and doctors.
"We are thrilled to collectively host one of the strongest 10K professional fields ever assembled and thousands of eager runners of all ranks at the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K," said Wittenberg. "Whether runners are coming out to beat the course record or their own personal record, an incredible cause and camaraderie between runners will inspire all."

Carrie Tollefson to Run First Marathon at Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
ST. PAUL, Minn. -
Olympian Carrie Tollefson, one of the most decorated distance runners in Minnesota history, plans to make her marathon debut at the 2013 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 6. The 13-time Minnesota High School State Champion, who has won multiple NCAA and USA Championships in her storied career, announced her plans in a video on her website CTolleRun.com last week.
"It is time for me to join the crazy group of marathoners and have some fun running the streets of the Twin Cities with everyone else," the Dawson native explained. "I have loved representing this state at different running events around the world and it only made sense to try this event right here where my running career started. I am so excited to run, and scared at the same time."
With less than six month to go until the starting gun fires for the 2013 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, the field for the 12,200 runner event is more than 50% full. The 32nd annual event which runs from downtown Minneapolis to the State Capitol in St. Paul is set for Sunday, Oct. 6.

JUST RUN Reaches 10,000th Young Athlete
CARMEL, Calif. - With steady growth over the past nine years, the JUST RUN youth fitness program has just surpassed the 10,000 mark of children registered in the program in a single school year. Last week, Brandon Meding at School 14 Elementary in Troy, NY became the 10,000th student registered into the database of students who log miles run.
"This is the day we've been waiting for," said Susan Love, Program Coordinator of JUST RUN, the youth fitness program of the Big Sur International Marathon. "Our program has been increasing in numbers and popularity every year and we're so proud that we've finally surpassed 10,000 children." Since 2004 more than 57,000 have taken part.
Unlike many running based programs affiliated with marathons and running races, JUST RUN is a year-round program, encouraging lifelong fitness. In addition to participating in regular running and fitness activities, students also learn about healthy nutrition and good citizenship, or "Just Deeds." It's a web-based program, easy to implement by teachers and leaders in any locale.
In 2012, JUST RUN received a large grant from the CocaCola Foundation to help grow the program. In addition to stronger outreach at schools and conferences, JUST RUN is using social media to reach out to prospective teachers and leaders. Teaching tips and ideas, testimonials, contests, and photos from various school programs are just a few of the posts that will be made through the organization's new Facebook page.

Three Midwest Spring Marathons Join Forces to Support the Boston Marathon
PITTSBURGH- In the aftermath of the
Boston Marathon tragedy on April 15, race directors across the country saw an outpouring of compassion and support from runners who want to help and support Boston during their run in recent and upcoming marathons.
Race directors from the DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon
and the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon - all events held in May - have joined forces to provide an opportunity for their participants to show support of the Boston Marathon through donations to the One Fund Boston (www.onefundboston.org). One Fund Boston was announced April 17 by Mass. Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Menino, the purpose of which is to raise money to help those families most affected by the tragic events that unfolded during the Boston Marathon.
Each race made available at their event blue wristbands inscribed with "Boston Strong". Participants can "purchase" the bands for whatever amount they would like to give as a donation to One Fund Boston. All of the money will be sent directly to One Fund Boston at the conclusion of each respective race weekend.

Sergio Reyes First to Three-Peat at Flying Pig Marathon
CINCINNATI (May 5, 2013) --
Sergio Reyes, the 2009 and 2012 winner of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G, is the first to win the event three times with his victory Sunday in the 15th anniversary running of the race.
31-year-old Reyes, of Palmdale, California, won the event in 2 hours, 21 minutes, 51 seconds, 13 seconds better than his winning time of 2:22:04 last year. While Reyes is the first to three-peat, twice have Flying Pig winners won the event two times, on the men's side by Rudolf Jun and the women's side, Rebecca Gallaher, both in 2000 and 2001.
"It was great, great enthusiasm along the course, there were a lot of Boston supporters and that was just really encouraging. When the going got tough, those guys really gave me motivation," said Reyes, who placed 12th at the Boston Marathon last year. "This is one of my favorite races; it's almost a home town race for me."
Second in the men's division was 38-year-old Rob Morwood of Lebanon, who came in second to Reyes last year as well. He finished this year in 2:34:30. Third was 32-year-old Derrick Butler
of Cincinnati in 2:35:29.
On the women's side, 29-year-old
Rebecca Walter of Bloomington, Indiana, an assistant track and cross country coach at Indiana University, won in 2:53:58, in the first non-trail marathon she had ever run.
"The course here, I liked it, it was uphill then downhill, it's the way I like to run," said Walter, who was also making her first visit to Cincinnati.
A record number of participants were part of the 15th anniversary of the Flying Pig Marathon with 33,852 signed up for weekend events, a 9.1% increase over 2012. All 50 states and 16 countries were represented in the field. For the Flying Pig events, the full marathon had 4,920 registrants; Border Energy Half Marathon, 12,129; 4-person relays, 2,360; Toyota 10K, 3,704; Tri State Running Company 5K, 5,441; Kids Marathon, 4,478; Pigability, 170 and Piglet Fun Run, 650.
