Komon Wins Second UAE Healthy Kidney 10K Title
NEW YORK CITY (May 11, 2013) - Cloudy skies and rain showers just before the start could not deter the 5,851 runners who finished the ninth-annual UAE Healthy Kidney 10K on Saturday, May 11 in Central Park.

From the moment the starting horn sounded, Kenya's
Leonard Patrick Komon made it clear that he was the man to beat. The 2011 Healthy Kidney 10K winner and course-record holder sprinted to the front of the pack and blazed through the first mile in 4:18; he followed that with another 4:18 for the second mile.

Through the hilly middle miles, Komon fought to keep ahead of record pace. He ran 4:33 for the third mile, and his five-kilometer split of 13:40 put him well in position to break his own Central Park record.

As Komon chased the record and the $30,000
Zayed Bonus that would accompany it, he built an ever-increasing lead over Moses Kipsiro of Uganda. Several seconds back of Kipsiro, a pack of three men-Kenyans
Edwin Soi and Stephen Sambu, along with Abera Kuma of Ethiopia-battled for third place.

Over the second half of the race, the fast early pace and the course's rolling hills took their toll on Komon, and but he never relented, leading from gun to tape to win in a time of 27:58. Although he missed the course-record bonus, he did win $25,000 for first place, the largest winner's purse for any non-marathon race in the United States.

Nick Willis Breaks Medtronic TC 1 Mile Record

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - (May 9, 2013) -

Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis extended his season winning streak to eight races with a record-breaking victory at the Medtronic TC 1 Mile on Thursday eveningin Minneapolis. The New Zealand native clocked 3 minutes, 56.2 seconds to break three-time Medtronic TC 1 Mile champion David Torrence's 2011 record of 3:58.4.

In the women's professional race, Sarah Brown of Knoxville, TN, the 2010 race runner-up, edged Canadian Olympian Nicole Sifuentes at the tape in 4:33.3, with Sifuentes stopped at 4:33.4. Defending champion Heather Kampf of Minneapolis was third (4:34.1).

More than 3,100 runners participated in the 9th edition that raised $10,000 for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. The event, which raced through the heart of downtown Minneapolis, consisted of seven waves of runners of all ages and paces.

The 30-year-old Willis (above, courtesy Competitive Image), who won his silver medal at the Beijing Games in 2008, blasted away from the field in the late-going, but eased his way to the finish line in the final meters despite the $10,000 record bonus.

JUST RUN Reaches 10,000th Young Athlete

CARMEL, Calif. - With steady growth over the past nine years, the
JUST RUN youth fitness program has just surpassed the 10,000 mark of children registered in the program in a single school year. Last week, Brandon Meding at School 14 Elementary in Troy, NY became the 10,000th student registered into the database of students who log miles run.

"This is the day we've been waiting for," said Susan Love, Program Coordinator of JUST RUN, the youth fitness program of the Big Sur International Marathon. "Our program has been increasing in numbers and popularity every year and we're so proud that we've finally surpassed 10,000 children." Since 2004 more than 57,000 have taken part.

Unlike many running based programs affiliated with marathons and running races, JUST RUN is a year-round program, encouraging lifelong fitness. In addition to participating in regular running and fitness activities, students also learn about healthy nutrition and good citizenship, or "Just Deeds." It's a web-based program, easy to implement by teachers and leaders in any locale.

In 2012, JUST RUN received a large grant from the CocaCola Foundation to help grow the program. In addition to stronger outreach at schools and conferences, JUST RUN is using social media to reach out to prospective teachers and leaders. Teaching tips and ideas, testimonials, contests, and photos from various school programs are just a few of the posts that will be made through the organization's new Facebook page.
