BolderBOULDER Announces Team USA and Team Colorado
BOULDER, Colo. - BolderBOULDER, America's All-Time Best 10K, has announced the men and women that will be racing in the 2013 BolderBOULDER with teams USA and Colorado for the International Team Challenge.
The BolderBOULDER established the International Team Challenge in 1998 and it includes professional runners from all over the world that compete on three-person teams in a team by country format, for one of the largest non-marathon prize purse races in the country. This year's total prize purse is valued at $110,600 before bonuses. The men's and women's professional races follow the BolderBOULDER course and are scheduled to finish just before the start of the Memorial Day Tribute.
"We are always very excited to host the International Team Challenge each year and feel that not only is it a chance to showcase some of the best professional runners from all over the world but that is also a highlight for every spectator and BolderBOULDER runner on race day," said
Cliff Bosley, race director.
Men for Team USA include; Aaron Braun, a Fort Collins native and Adams State graduate who placed fourth in the 2012 International Team Challenge; Brent Vaughn an Aurora, CO native, University Colorado graduate and winner of the 2011 U.S. Cross Country Championship; and Kenyon Nueman
a Nike Racing Team runner and University of Colorado alumni.
Women for Team USA include; Stephanie Rothstein, who placed 8th in the Olympic Track and field trials in the 10,000 meter race; Laura Thweat, the ninth fastest 5K University of Colorado performer ever; and Olympian Deena Kastor, 2004 Olympic Bronze medalist and three-time winner of the BolderBOULDER.

U.S. Field Looks Strong at 35th Freihofer's Run for Women
ALBANY, NY - The 35th anniversary Freihofer's Run for Women (FRW) 5K, set for June 1, 2013 at 9:45 a.m. in Albany, NY, will be another showcase of top national talent, including those who could very well become the future of American women's distance running.
Leading the charge in the open division will be Michelle Frey, 31, (Minneapolis, MN), who finished a strongsixth place - making her the top American - at last year's Freihofer's (16:03). A seven-time state champion for Iowa City High School before earning All-Big Ten honors at the University of Wisconsin, Frey appears to have overcome a series of niggling plantar fasciitis and hamstring injuries. She finished 22nd at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (2:37:03).
Pushing her for the lead throughout will likely be FRW veterans Tera Moody (above), 32, (Colorado Springs, CO) and Esther Erb, 28, (Blowing Rock, NC). Moody continues to prove herself as one of the toughest American runners around having placed sixth at the Houston Marathon (2:39:10), second behind Mattie Suver at the GO! St. Louis half marathon (1:12:34) and 3rd at last Saturday's USA 25K Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich. Erb, meanwhile, the fourth American finisher across the line at last year's event (16:48), knows the Freihofer's course intimately and will certainly use that inside knowledge to her advantage.
"Athlete recruiter John Tope has done another stellar job assembling a deep American field for our event," said longtime FRW Event Director George Regan, noting that the women will vie for a piece of the $27,000 purse, $10,000 of which is earmarked for the winner. "Any of these women has the ability to pose a real threat to the international field."

Tolossa Gedefa Fufi, Diane Nukuri-Johnson Win 2013 Bay to Breakers
SAN FRANCISCO - (May 19, 2013) Taking on the streets of San Francisco for the first time ever, Tolossa Gedefa Fufi, from Ethiopia, placed first at the 2013 Bay to Breakers presented by craigslist, on Sunday, May 19, 2013. At 21 years of age, Fufi was one of the youngest elite runners in the field and follows in the footsteps of the many talented Ethiopians that have historically raced in Bay to Breakers.
Fufi (above) was neck and neck with Ethiopian Tesfaye Sendeku Alemayehu
all the way up to the top of the Hayes Street Hill, and then at mile three, as they took the turn from Fell Street to Divisadero, Fufi picked up the pace, took the lead and held it all the way to the finish in 35 minutes, one second. American Olympian Ryan Hall was second, 39 seconds behind Fufi. Alemayehu was third in 36:04.
The battle for first place amongst the women was also close with
Diane Nukuri-Johnson from Burundi taking first place in 40:12. Nukuri-Johnson and second place finisher
Adrienne Herzog (40:42) from Netherlands were running together from the start of the race to the bottom of Hayes Street Hill. On the way up, Nukuri-Johnson was fighting fatigue and Herzog surged ahead to win the climb to the top. Nukuri-Johnson started to recover on the descent and at the four mile mark in the park, she made her decisive move, took the lead and won the race for the women.Local favorite
Chelsea Reilly was third in 40:56.
"Coming off of an eighth place finish at the recent Boston Marathon, and placing second at the 2012 Bay to Breakers, I am thrilled to take first place at Bay to Breakers this year," said Nukuri-Johnson. A prize purse of $39,000 was distributed among the top finishers.
Since 1912, this legendary race has taken thousands of participants including elite athletes, centipede teams of 13, celebrities, costumed racers, marathon runners, weekend warriors and more from the edge of the bay, to the shore of the Pacific Ocean, via several San Francisco neighborhoods
