LOS ANGELES - With personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles and 200 meters - the first and last races of the day - Jaci Powell stands in seventh place after the opening four events of the heptathlon at the Pac-12 Multi-Event Championships being held on the USC campus.

Powell covered the 100-meter hurdles in 14.07, below the 14.19w she ran in mid-March. The time ranked third among the 10 competitors vying for the conference title. Although Powell struggled in the high jump, clearing 4-10.25, she came back with an effort of 35-7.25 in the shot put.

Then in the 200 meters, Powell sprinted to the finish in 24.85, which was the second-fastest time of the afternoon and a lifetime best by almost a full second.

All told, Powell stands in seventh position with 3,052 points, ahead of the pace she set on her way to taking second at the Cal Multis in Berkeley earlier this year, and just one point out of sixth. Keia Pinnick of Arizona State is the day-one leader with 3,441 points.

Powell, a two-time state junior college champion in the heptathlon at Golden West College before transferring to Cal, will finish the heptathlon Sunday with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. She owns a PR of 5,191 for the full seven events.

In addition to the start of the Pac-12 Championships, a squad of Golden Bears traveled to the Sacramento State open for a last opportunity to improve marks before next week's conference events and several of them did just that.

Aided by a tailwind over the allowable 2.0 meters per second in the men's 100 meters, Ray Stewart tied his second best at 10.60 and Dash Oliver ran his fastest race of the year at 10.68.

The women's 100 meters was also wind-aided, which allowed Carisma Lyday to win in a lifetime-best 11.67 seconds, and Golde Ibia took second in the 100-meter hurdles in a PR 13.94w. In the women's high jump, Kristin Rimbach took first with a season-best 5-8.

The Bears picked up three victories on the men's side, including Stewart finishing in a wind-aided 13.80 in the 110-meter hurdles. Freshman Kristian Martinez out-dueled Sac State's Darrell Jackson to win the 800 meters, 1:54.50 to 1:54.57, while Matt Peterson took first in the 5000 meters in 15:56.43. Cheri Chan also claimed the women's javelin with a mark of 116-0.
