Kiprono, Mohammed Capture 35th BolderBOULDER 10K

BOULDER, Colo. (May 27, 2013) - BolderBOULDER, which has been recognized by Runner's World as America's All-Time Best 10K, celebrated the 35th running of the annual 10K race here Monday. With an increased security presence in the wake of the attack on the Boston Marathon six weeks ago, the day ran smoothly and was marked by a safe, fun and festive race day celebrations by 48,741 registrants and thousands more spectators to the stadium.

"We weren't quite sure what the reaction would be to the increased security measures this year, but the feedback we received is that everyone had an awesome race experience and appreciated the extra safety precautions," said
Cliff Bosley, race director.

The International Team Challenge was marked by a second consecutive win from 22-year-old Allan Kiprono (Kenya) with a time of 29 minutes, 28.79 seconds. The time improved Kiprono's 2012 result in Boulder by more than 25 seconds. It was the 12th win by a Kenyan runner, the most by any country in the history of the BolderBOULDER.

Kenya also took the top spot in the men's team standings, snapping a six-year reign by the Ethiopians. Ethiopia took second and the United States was third. Aaron Braun was the first American man to cross the finish line in ninth place. He was fourth here in 2012.

In the women's elite race, Merima Mohammed
(Ethiopia) won her first BolderBOULDER, the fourth win by an Ethiopian runner in the last five years, with a finishing time of 33:58.79. The 19-year-old won the Chevron Houston Marathon earlier this year and has a marathon best of 2:23:14.

While Ethiopia placed first in the women's team standings, with Mexico in second and the United States placing third and finishing in the top three for the fourth straight year. U.S. Olympian Deena Kastor, 40, led the American women, finishing fourth in 34:43.62. The 2004 Olympic Marathon bronze medalist won the race in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and finished third in 2012.

The women's race was considerably slower than a year ago.

The total prize purse for the elite runners and International Team Challenge participants was $141,166.

Runners Turn Out for Boston's Run to Remember to Honor First Responders

BOSTON (May 27, 2013) - Runners turned out in record numbers at the Boston's Run to Remember on Sunday to honor law enforcement officers, first responders and others who run toward the danger, not away from it.

The ninth annual charity event, created as a tribute to Massachusetts law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, took on added poignancy this year in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon tragedy in April.

Runners wore their own bibs in front as well as a special bib on their backs to honor MIT police Officer Sean Collier, who was ambushed and killed by the Boston Marathon bombers. The bib included the name and badge number 179 of Collier, who had told friends he was planning to take part in the race this year along with scores of other Boston law enforcement officers.

During the opening ceremony, Cecil Jones, president of the Boston Police Runner's Club, which organizes Boston's Run to Remember, asked runners to remember Collier during their run. "You all should have Sean Collier's number on your back," said Jones, a Boston detective. "It's one way to remember what Sean Collier did, the sacrifice that he made."
