Andre De Grasse's won the men's 100m dash with a stadium-record time an ran a leg on the winning men's 4x400m relay to lead USC to a sweep over UCLA in the annual Dual Meet held at Loker Stadium today (May 3). The USC men's team won 82-81 thanks to the relay win in the final event, while the USC women's team won 93-70 despite trailing 39-6 after the first five scored events. The USC men improved to 43-39 all-time against UCLA, while the Trojan women trail 22-10, but have won seven of the last eight meetings with the Bruins. It was USC's first sweep in the series since the 2010 season. The UCLA men held an 81-77 lead going into the men's 4x400m relay race, but the team of freshman Ricky Morgan, junior Just'N Thymes, the junior De Grasse and senior Davonte Stewart won with a time of 3:09.89 to secure the five points and give the Trojans the 82-81 win. It was only the fourth time in Dual Meet history that the difference was just one point, the last time coming in 2003. The Trojans led the race from the start, but the Bruins kept the pressure on and it wasn't decided until Stewart was able to pull away over the final 150 meters and UCLA slowed to a 3:15.91 finish. De Grasse set the Loker Stadium record when he won the men's 100m dash with a wind-legal PR of 10.04 (+0.4) which also tied the meet record set by Ato Boldon of UCLA in 1996 and moved him into a second-place tie on USC's all-time list. De Grasse beat the Loker Stadium record of 10.07 which was set by Aaron Brown on May 11, 2013 and tied by BeeJay Lee on May 12, 2013. Speaking of Lee, the senior placed second in the 100m dash with a time of 10.17, while UCLA's Leon Powell took third with a time of 10.38. Thymes placed fourth in the 100m with a time of 10.41, senior Bryan Mercado was fifth with a PR of 10.51 and freshman Adoree' Jackson was sixth with a PR of 10.54. De Grasse now has the fastest wind-legal 100m and 200m (20.16) times this season by college runner. The USC women's team outscored UCLA 87-31 over the final 15 events and clinched the meet when senior Erica Capellino won the 1500m race with a time of 4:34.29 to give the Trojans an 83-66 lead. Junior Katerina Berdousi was fourth in the 1500m race with a time of 4:36.98, senior Kira Soderstrom was eighth (4:48.99), junior Jenna Tong was 10th (4:51.08), freshman Amber Bragdon was 11th (4:52.04), junior Reika Kijima was 14th (4:57.55), freshman Emma Kao was 15th (5:08.00) and junior Alyssa Reardon was 16th (5:11.46). The USC men entered the day with a 6-3 lead thanks to senior Conor McCullough's win (248-11) and redshirt freshman David Sellens (165-3) third place finish in the hammer throw yesterday. The Bruins scored the first 18 points of the day by sweeping an uncontested 3000m SC race and the javelin throw. Senior Diego Lopez was fourth in the javelin throw with a best mark of 178-6 (54.42m), while redshirt junior Conner Sullivan placed fifth with a throw of 176-10 (53.89m). Sullivan, who is the holder and a backup quarterback on the football team and former USC baseball player, was competing in his first-ever javelin throw competition. Freshman Adoree' Jackson then won the men's long jump with a wind-aided leap of 25-2.00/7.67m (+4.0w) to earn the Trojans five points and cut the Bruin lead to 25-11. Freshman Dominic Smallwood placed fifth in the event with a best jump of 22-10.00/6.96m (+1.0), senior Jovonte Slater was sixth with a jump of 22-9.00/6.93 (+4.7w) and senior Jabre Millon was seventh with a best jump of 21-10.00/6.65m (+2.0). The men's 4x100m relay team of Lee, De Grasse, Thymes and Mercado then won with a time of 39.42 to cut the Bruin lead to 25-16. UCLA then swept the 1500m race to open up a 34-16 lead. Redshirt sophomore Josh Galen was sixth in the 1500m with a time of 4:14.64 and freshman Gabriel Morin was seventh with a time of 4:23.96. The shot put competition was next to finish and redshirt freshman Nick Ponzio placed third with a slight PR of 63-2.75 (19.27m). His throw bettered his eighth-place standing on USC's all-time list by half an inch. The scored was UCLA 42, USC 17 following seven events. The Trojan men hurdled back into contention when freshman Marquis Morris and senior D.J. Morgan finished first and second in the men's 110m HH. The times were wind-aided, but impressive as Morris ran 13.80 (+3.5w) and Morgan 13.84 (+3.5w) to move into the NCAA top 30 in the event. Senior Allen Williams was fifth with a time of 14.41 (+3.5w). The Trojans had cut the gap to 43-25. USC continued the momentum by going 1-2 in the men's 400m race with Stewart winning his second consecutive Dual Meet 400m race with a PR today of 46.51 and Morgan taking second by tying his season-best time of 46.72. USC was now within 11 points at 44-33 after nine events. The 10th event to finish was the aforementioned 100m race which made it UCLA 45-41. The men's 800m race was finished next with freshman Robert Ford taking second with a time of 1:49.76 and senior Myles Andrews placing third with a time of 1:50.46. Junior Kyle Iverson placed sixth in his first race of the season with a time of 1:56.11, Morin was seventh (2:02.77) and junior William Robinson was eighth (PR of 2:03.79). UCLA led 50-45 after 11 events. The 400m IH race became crucial as in a tight race Morris won with a PR of 52.78 and D.J. Morgan took third with a time of 53.51. Two UCLA runners were disqualified for a leg infraction which moved Morgan from fourth to third which would prove important as the meet progressed. Senior Jemal Williams placed fourth with a time of 56.63. USC trailed 53-51 with seven event remaining. The decathlete Jemal Williams took third in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 14-5.25 (4.40m) to earn a point, while sophomore Mikey Rozvar no heighted. The score was now 61-52 UCLA. Freshman Randall Cunningham then won the men's high jump with a clearance of 7-2.50 (2.20m). Senior Michael Krone tied for second in the high jump with a clearance of 6-10.75 (2.10m) and Smallwood in his first high jump competition cleared 6-2.75 (1.90m) to finish sixth. Cunningham and Krone totaled seven points to cut the Bruins' lead to 63-59. USC then took its first lead since the start of the day at 68-63 with a sweep in the 200m dash. Lee won with a time of 20.42 (+1.8), De Grasse was second at 20.74 (+1.8) and Thymes was third at 20.78 (+1.8). Mercado also was in the 200m and placed fifth with a time of 21.47 (+1.8). UCLA then swept the 5000m race with USC's lone participant sophomore Clayton Rule placing fifth with a time of 15:39.26. The Bruins had gone back into the lead at 72-68. The men's discus throw was next to finish and Ponzio won with a big PR of 185-3 (56.47m), 16 feet farther than his previous best throw this season. McCullough was fourth in the discus with a throw of 160-7 (48.95m) and Sellens was seventh with a mark of 126-2 (38.45m). USC now trailed 76-73. An exciting triple jump followed with UCLA's Idrees Bernard winning on his final jump with a wind-aided leap of 50-6.00. Smallwood had been leading to that point and settled for second with a season-best jump of 49-7.25/15.12m (+1.6). Allen Williams was third with a season-best jump of 48-8.75/14.85m (+1.7), while Millon was fourth at 44-8.25/13.62m (+2.4w) and Slater was fifth with a jump of 44-0.75/13.43 (+2.6w). The results of the triple jump made it 81-77 UCLA and set the stage for the Trojans to win the meet in the 4x400m relay. USC's women entered the day trailing 5-4 after senior Jenny Ozorai placed second (197-11) and Alexandra Collatz third (189-11) in the hammer throw yesterday. UCLA swept the pole vault and javelin throw to build its lead to 23-4 after three events. Junior Felicia Horvath was the only Trojan in the pole vault and she cleared 11-6.25 (3.51m) to tie for fifth. Sophomore Amalie Iuel was fifth in the javelin throw with a mark of 109-3 (33.30m), while senior Julia Tseng placed sixth with a throw of 81-11 (24.96m). Iuel was also competing in the high jump at the same time which held her to three throws of the javelin. In her first high jump competition of the season she tied her collegiate best and took third with a clearance of 5-7.00 (1.70m). USC trailed 31-5 after four events. The 5000m race was next and Berdousi took third place with a college best of 17:14.10 which moved her from eighth to seventh on USC's all-time list in the event. UCLA had opened up a 39-6 lead. The shot put was next to finish and junior Tera Novy placed second with a mark of 49-10 (15.19m) and sophomore Tanya Sapa took third with a best throw of 49-3.50 (15.02m). The score was now UCLA 44, USC 10. Soderstrom started the turnaround for the Trojans by winning the steeplechase with a time of 10:37.54 and Tong took third with a season-best time of 11:04.43. The lead for the Bruins was now 47-16. The women's 4x100m relay team of freshman Deanna Hill, freshman Ky Westbrook, junior Alexis Faulknor and redshirt junior Tynia Gaither then picked up five points by cruising to victory with a time of 43.55 Senior Melia Cox then won the women's 100m HH with a time of 13.33 (+3.2w). Freshman sensation Dior Hall was out to a blazing start but clipped the fourth hurdle and tumbled to the track. Still, USC gain on the Bruins and trailed 51-26 after nine events. USC then used a sweep in the 400m race to really get back into contention, trailing 51-35. Senior Vanessa Jones won the 400m race with a time of 53.08, freshman Kendall Ellis was second at 53.84 and senior Akawkaw Ncha-Ndip was third in her first 400m race of the season with a time of 54.09. Junior Alexis Faulknor then won the women's long jump with a season-best legal jump of 20-5.75/6.24m (+1.9) and freshman Madisen Richard took third with a wind-aided leap of 20-3.00/6.17m (+4.5w). The pair picked up six points and USC had cut the UCLA lead to 54-41. Novy and Collatz then took first and second in the discus throw to cut the lead to 55-49. Novy won the competition with a mark of 184-10 (56.34m) and Collatz was second with a throw of 183-5 (55.91m). Sapa was fourth in the discus throw with a mark of 141-11 (43.27m), redshirt sophomore Erika Peyton was fifth with a throw of 140-5 (42.79m) and Ozorai was sixth with a throw of 138-1 (42.08m). Sapa, Peyton and Ozorai were all throwing the discus for the first time this season. USC then took the lead at 58-55 following its sweep in the 100m. USC's top runner going into the race Ky Westbrook, who had run a wind-aided 11.20 (+2.3w), false started, but the Trojans still swept the event. Faulknor had a PR of 11.30 (+0.8) to win and move into 10th place on USC's all-time list in the 100m dash. Gaither was second in the 100m with a time of 11.47 (+-0.8), Hill was third at 11.51 (+0.8) and sophomore Destinee Brown was fourth at 11.62 (+0.8). Sophomore Cameron Pettigrew had a big PR of 2:11.28 to place second in the 800m race and earn USC three points. Kijima was fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:12.85, junior Natasha Strickland was fifth with a PR of 2:13.50 and Kao was sixth with a PR of 2:14.47. The meet was now deadlocked at 61 after 14 events. Junior Jaide Stepter and Iuel took first and second in the 400m IH for the second consecutive season to give the Trojans a 69-61 lead after 15 events which they would not surrender. Stepter won with a time of 57.53 and Iuel took second with a time of 58.69. USC then swept the 200m race to extend the lead to 78-62 and set up Capellino's clinching 1500m race. Westbrook would not be denied after her 100m false start and won the 200m dash with a time of 23.21 (+3.1w). Hill was second in the 200m race with a time of 23.24 (+3.5w), Brown was third with a time of 23.82 (+3.5w) and freshman Gabriella Cantrell was fourth with a time of 23.92 (+3.5w). About a minute after Capellino clinched the victory, Cox won the women's triple jump with a wind-aided season-best of 41-5.25/12.63 (+2.4w). With one event remaining, USC led 88-70. The Bruins did not run a women's 4x400m relay, so USC's team of Jones, Ellis, Ncha-Ndip and Stepter won uncontested with a time of 3:41.76.
