Andre De Grasse's won the men's 100m dash with a stadium-record time an ran a leg on the winning men's 4x400m relay to lead USC to a sweep over UCLA in the annual Dual Meet held at Loker Stadium today (May 3). The USC men's team won 82-81 thanks to the relay win in the final event, while the USC women's team won 93-70 despite trailing 39-6 after the first five scored events. The USC men improved to 43-39 all-time against UCLA, while the Trojan women trail 22-10, but have won seven of the last eight meetings with the Bruins. It was USC's first sweep in the series since the 2010 season. The UCLA men held an 81-77 lead going into the men's 4x400m relay race, but the team of freshman Ricky Morgan, junior Just'N Thymes, the junior De Grasse and senior Davonte Stewart won with a time of 3:09.89 to secure the five points and give the Trojans the 82-81 win. It was only the fourth time in Dual Meet history that the difference was just one point, the last time coming in 2003. The Trojans led the race from the start, but the Bruins kept the pressure on and it wasn't decided until Stewart was able to pull away over the final 150 meters and UCLA slowed to a 3:15.91 finish. De Grasse set the Loker Stadium record when he won the men's 100m dash with a wind-legal PR of 10.04 (+0.4) which also tied the meet record set by Ato Boldon of UCLA in 1996 and moved him into a second-place tie on USC's all-time list. De Grasse beat the Loker Stadium record of 10.07 which was set by Aaron Brown on May 11, 2013 and tied by BeeJay Lee on May 12, 2013. Speaking of Lee, the senior placed second in the 100m dash with a time of 10.17, while UCLA's Leon Powell took third with a time of 10.38. Thymes placed fourth in the 100m with a time of 10.41, senior Bryan Mercado was fifth with a PR of 10.51 and freshman Adoree' Jackson was sixth with a PR of 10.54. De Grasse now has the fastest wind-legal 100m and 200m (20.16) times this season by college runner. The USC women's team outscored UCLA 87-31 over the final 15 events and clinched the meet when senior Erica Capellino won the 1500m race with a time of 4:34.29 to give the Trojans an 83-66 lead. Junior Katerina Berdousi was fourth in the 1500m race with a time of 4:36.98, senior Kira Soderstrom was eighth (4:48.99), junior Jenna Tong was 10th (4:51.08), freshman Amber Bragdon was 11th (4:52.04), junior Reika Kijima was 14th (4:57.55), freshman Emma Kao was 15th (5:08.00) and junior Alyssa Reardon was 16th (5:11.46). The USC men entered the day with a 6-3 lead thanks to senior Conor McCullough's win (248-11) and redshirt freshman David Sellens (165-3) third place finish in the hammer throw yesterday. The Bruins scored the first 18 points of the day by sweeping an uncontested 3000m SC race and the javelin throw. Senior Diego Lopez was fourth in the javelin throw with a best mark of 178-6 (54.42m), while redshirt junior Conner Sullivan placed fifth with a throw of 176-10 (53.89m). Sullivan, who is the holder and a backup quarterback on the football team and former USC baseball player, was competing in his first-ever javelin throw competition. Freshman Adoree' Jackson then won the men's long jump with a wind-aided leap of 25-2.00/7.67m (+4.0w) to earn the Trojans five points and cut the Bruin lead to 25-11. Freshman Dominic Smallwood placed fifth in the event with a best jump of 22-10.00/6.96m (+1.0), senior Jovonte Slater was sixth with a jump of 22-9.00/6.93 (+4.7w) and senior Jabre Millon was seventh with a best jump of 21-10.00/6.65m (+2.0).
