AUSTIN, TEXAS – Distance standouts freshman Bethan Knights and junior Thomas Joyce became the third and fourth Golden Bear to advance to the NCAA championships Saturday during day three of the 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Championships in Austin, Texas.. Knights was seventh in the 5,000 meters with a career-best 16:02.49, while Joyce placed 10th in the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:43.23.
“Both Thomas and Bethan did their job tonight,” said Cal director of track and field Tony Sandoval. “It is always tricky with heats. Thomas had a good kick and was coasting with the other auto qualifiers when he was passed right at the finish. Luckily his heat was the faster of the two. Bethan pushed the pace with three laps to go as she and the other top five separated from the other contenders. She kicked home as she was feeling really good.”
On Thursday, Cal had two other athletes qualify for the national championships – freshman Walter Jones in the long jump and Ethan Cochran in the discus to move on to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.
Jones was 10th overall in the long jump with a lead of 25-7 (7.80) advancing him to the NCAA meet in his first season at Cal. Cochran was seventh in the discus with a throw of 183.0 (55.79m).
Other results Saturday for the Bears included sophomore Kiare Tanner placing 16th in the triple jump with a leap of 41-4½ (12.61m), senior Rukayah Bent-Mikal was 24th at 40-11 ½ (12.44m) and freshman Ashley Anderson was 30th at 40-7 ½ (12.38m).
During the men’s triple jump competition Saturday, junior Jonte Grant placed 16th with a leap of 50-4 ¾ (15.36m), while freshman Karsten Wethington was 29th with a jump of 48-10 ¾ (14.90m).
Cal’s men’s 400 meter relay team of Wethington, Walter Jones, Ashtyn Davis and Khalfani Muhammad placed 20th with a time of 40.68. Freshman Ashtyn Davis placed 18 th in the 110 meter hurdles with a career-best mark of 13.89.
