Pennel, Erb Win USA Titles at Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
ST. PAUL, Minn. (October 5, 2014) - First-time marathoner Tyler Pennel
of Blowing Rock, N.C. and last year's women's third-place finisher Esther Erb of Richmond,Va. earned victories at the 33 rd Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
Sunday. Pennel clocked 2 hours, 13 minutes, 32 seconds on the course that starts in downtown Minneapolis and finishes on the State Capitol grounds in St. Paul. Erb ran 2:34:01.
The victorious pair earned USA Marathon Championship titles with the wins and pocketed $25,000 each for their efforts.
Pennel, who was content to be part of a seven member lead pack at the half-way mark, was building a lead by mile 21 that stretched to a comfortable 29 seconds by the finish line.
Jared Ward of Provo, Utah finished second in 2:14:00, while Scott Smith of Oklahoma City was third in 2:14:40.
"I wanted to relax until 20 miles," Pennel said. "Scott went first, then I did. I was scary to run the last few miles alone. Miles 23 and 24 were all out. I was happy when I got to Summit, because those earlier hills really hurt."

New Women's Course Record at Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (October 5, 2014) - Kenyan
Lilian Mariita set a new course record at the fifth running of the Woodrow Wils on Bridge Half Marathon Sunday under sunny skies, favorable racing weather and a popular new course.
The 26-year-old gained the lead crossing the bridge after 10 miles and ended at the National Harbor finish in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 34 seconds. The previous record of 1:12:44 was set by Bekelech Bedada
of Ethiopia in 2011.
Mariita earned $1,200 for the victory and an additional $1,000 record bonus. Early leader Etaferahu Temesgen
of Ethiopia followed just 10 seconds later for second place in the women's race.
But it was the men's race which brought the late-stage drama and a roar from the crowd at the finish. Two seconds separated defending champion Girma Gebre,
Gosa Tefera and Derege Demie, all Ethiopians flown to Washington to run the bridge compliments of Ethiopian Airlines.

Braun, Johnson Win Rock 'n' Roll San Jose Half Marathon
SAN JOSE, Calif. (October 5, 2014) - It was a warm morning in San Jose and
Aaron Braun knew he had some competition out there. He came out ready to go and looking for the win.
Behind the strength of a strong surge into the lead just past the 11-mile mark, Braun, a 27-year-old from Alamosa, Colorado, ran in a close pack of five breaking down to two at mile 9. Braun's tactics resulted in a strong lead to the finish line, crossing the tape in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 56 seconds.
"I wanted to go fast today but with it being warm I set that aside and wanted to go for the win," Braun said of his performance. "Up next for me is the .US 12K Championships. I won it last year, and I'm trying to go back and win the title. I was two seconds away from the American record."
