Track Club: I only run for my school’s cross country and track program.
CONNING: How did you get started in cross country and track and field?
CHANCE: I got started in track and cross country my freshman year. I was friends with a current DC runner(at the time) my 8th grade year and I told him I ran a 5:40 mile in p.e. and he said to come out in the summer. I trained all summer with DC but ended up having to go to San Juan where I lost most of my training. About a month/ month and a half later I returned to DC and have been running ever since.
CONNING: Why do you participate in cross country and track?
CHANCE: I participate in cross country and track for the fitness, being able to stay in shape, and have something to do after school. I also enjoy running as a sport because it's really rewarding and I enjoy pushing myself to new limits and pushing past the pain encountered running feels great. The so called "runners high" is also a great feeling after a workout!
CONNING: What is your favorite training location?
CHANCE: My favorite training location is the Pennsylvania Ave. Hill before Sacramento Bar Park in Fair Oaks, Ca. I do enjoy training here as I feel it has been a big part of my success in the past year. It is about a 600m hill that is challenging to say the least.
CONNING: What is your favorite cross country course and track to compete at and why?
CHANCE: My favorite cross country course is Willow Hills reservoir in Folsom Ca because it is a very hilly course and mentally challenging course. I like this course because the amount of hill training we do is like our battering ram on this course and the mental stress I put on myself a few days a week definitely pays off here. My favorite track is Elk Grove High Schools track. I like tracks like there's because it's more of a harder track surface and it's also the place where I finished third in the SJS masters 3200 sophomore year and got me to state which was a great feeling for both me and my coach because we had two guys go that year(Sean jagerson) and was the first time Coach King ever took a soph to state.
CONNING: What kind of workouts do you do?
CHANCE:The type of workouts we do has changed drastically from last year. In a normal week we will have two aerobic hill workouts which consist of a run out to Pennsylvania ave and 8 hills nonstop at a slightly uncomfortable pace. there's usually a one to two day rest period between these days. Tuesday consists of a long run for recovery with last 2-3 mile being a pick up. Wednesday or Thursday(depending on how many days rest between hill workouts) will be a hill sprint workout which is 8-12 sprints up the steepest sections of Pennsylvania ave hill. and Friday will be an easy 6-7 mile workout. *workout schedule is current, in the next few weeks we will be switching one hill workout to either 4-5 all out hills or an interval workout which can be 2 sets of 4x800 w 45 sec. rest, 6xmile or 3x2mile.
CONNING: How many workouts do you do per day?
CHANCE: Our workout schedule consists of Monday, Wednesday, Friday strength work followed by 5 mile run in the morning with afternoon workout unless there is a race. if there is a Friday race then we will have a Saturday practice which is usually 8 miles easy.
CONNING: When you compete, do you have a plan or strategy?
CHANCE: When competing this year my coach and I have developed a strategy of starting out fairly comfortable but fast the first mile then moving up fast but consistently the last 2 miles or so. (easier terms fast and easy first mile and all out last two miles). this is the plan that has lead to my two Bay Area wins.
CONNING: Chance won the Castro Valley Invitational on October 11 and the Phil Wilder Mariner Invitational on October 18.

These factors and their variation have given way to a variety of disciplines, functions and purposes for a longboard.
