Chico State Women on the Prowl Back Toward the Top of the West in Division II Regional Rankings

Chico State Women on the Prowl Back Toward the Top of the West in Division II Regional Rankings
October 1, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – While the weekend didn’t produce any new No. 1 teams in any of the men’s or women’s regions in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Regional Rankings, a number of teams advanced toward the pinnacles of their respective regions.

The Chico State women — preseason favorites in the West Region who had since fallen to No. 3 — took down Simon Fraser in a head-to-head battle at the Stanford Invitational to move past the Clan into the West’s No. 2 spot, while two men’s regions start the week with new No. 1 squads.

Chico State fell to No. 3 in the West in the first regular-season edition of the Regional Rankings, passed by Alaska Anchorage and Simon Fraser at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Following a victory over Simon Fraser at Stanford led by senior Ayla Granados (21st in the mostly DI 6K race), the Wildcats are beginning to claw their way back to the top of the West.

Simon Fraser fell to No. 3 in the region. The move will likely be reflected in Wednesday’s National Coaches Poll, as Chico State was last week ranked No. 7 and Simon Fraser No. 6.

The Argonaut men of West Florida improved two spots to No. 2 in the South Region following a win at the Tampa Pre-Regional Meet, while Columbus State improved three positions in the Southeast Region as the top Division II squad at the Charlotte Invitational.

Elsewhere in the men’s polls, UC San Diego improved two spots to No. 3 in the West Region after a fifth-place team showing at the Roy Griak Invitational in the Maroon II race.

A pair of women’s teams improved to No. 3 in their respective regions, as Pittsburg State improved one spot in the Central Region and Flagler improved three notches in the Southeast Region. Also of note in the Central Region was U-Mary, which improved three spots to No. 4 behind Pittsburg State.

NCAA Division II Regional Championships will be held November 9 & 10, and more information about host sites and dates for specific meets can be found at Regional Championships Central.
