A Trio of New Top Teams in Division III Regional Rankings

A Trio of New Top Teams in Division III Regional Rankings
October 1, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – A trio of regions saw changes at the top in Tuesday’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Regional Rankings, including one region where a triad of national top-10 teams shuffled their order.

The Middlebury women (No. 10 nationally) took down MIT (No. 3) and Williams (No. 4) at the Williams Purple Valley Classic this past weekend to earn not only the team crown, but the top spot in the New England Region. In one of Division III’s premiere meets, Middlebury placed its top four runners among the first eight overall finishers en route to a score of 38.

The region title is far from decided, as MIT finished close behind with 43 points and Williams scored 46. As a result, MIT dropped to second in the region and Williams was displaced to third following Middlebury’s two-position leap to the region’s top spot.

Expect a similar reshuffling of the top 10 of the National Coaches Polls Wednesday to reflect the New England rearrangement.

Two men’s regions will enter the upcoming weekend with new teams at the helm of their rankings in NYU and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

NYU turned in a strong runner-up combined showing at the Dickinson Long and Short Invitational to move into first place in the Atlantic region.

As a result, NYU (No. 18 nationally) moved ahead of SUNY Cortland (No. 15) in what is just the latest action in a battle that has been developing all season between the two closely matched squads. The two teams split the region’s first-place votes with seven apiece.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (No. 22 nationally) defeated in-town rival Pomona-Pitzer (No. 19) at the Stanford Invitational to move to No. 1 in the West Region — at the expense of Pomona-Pitzer, which falls to No. 2. The Stags were led by sophomore Zorg Loustalet in 22nd place as the top Division III finisher.

NCAA Division III Regionals will be held Sunday, November 16. More information can be found at Regional Championships Central.
