Happy Chinese New Year (of the Tiger) – and Valentine’s Day
Youth Olympic Games developments
Planning and preparations continue for the first-ever Youth
Olympic Games scheduled 14-26 August 2010 at Singapore.
Meanwhile the 2014 edition of YOG was awarded this past
week to Nanjing, China by a 47-42 vote over Poznan, Poland.
This quadrennial meeting of teen-age athletes in varied sports
is for ages 14-18. More at Local Organizing Committee website:
http://www.singapore2010.sg/public/sg2010/en.html
However, for track and field athletics at Singapore’s Games
the stated age range is 16 or17 – born in 1993 or 1994. For
Nanjing that would be born in 1997 or 1998. So athletes born
in 1995 or 1996 could not be eligible for either YOG edition.
The athletics portion of 2010 Youth Olympic Games is
August 20-25.The steeple competition distance is 2000 meters.
“Americas” Area Trials for YOG is 3 April 2010 in Texas
University of Texas at Arlington will host this selection meet,
The girls 2000m steeple is scheduled at 1425 (2:45 p.m.).
Qualifying time is 7:45.17 achieved between 1 January 2009
and 21 March 2010. Entrants should have a passport. Details at:

Steepling safety series – Part Two
Steeplers face heavy barriers (80 to 100 kilograms weight) which
do not tip over like the lightweight hurdles of short races run in lanes.
Safe clearance requires clear vision as runners approach both the
on-track barriers and, more important, the fixed barrier at water jump.
Clear vision is restricted by bright light in the runners’ eyes, notably
when sun rays are angled, not overhead, such as three hours before sundown
and three hours after sunrise. However, the track’s straightaway
orientation (North-South or East-West) can be a critical variable.
Artificial light for night competition is also important, particularly
for water jump whose location in the “end zone” may be incompatible
with the position or angle of light poles.
Athletics leadership and meet managers should promote steeple
safety in varied ways – including scheduled time of steeple races.
