Track and Field Announces Stellar Incoming Class
12 women and 10 men are part of a deep and talented group.

Stanford, Calif. - Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field Edrick Floreal is pleased to announce an outstanding class of recruits set to come to Stanford in the fall of 2010. The class will continue to raise the talent level and depth of the program under Floreal.

The Stanford women's track and field and cross country program is proud to announce the signing of twelve outstanding student-athletes.

"The talented group of women is comprised of a world youth championships medalist, a national event leader, footlocker national finalists, high school All-Americans and over 10 state titles between them," said Floreal. "We aspire to recruit the highest caliber athletes to compete for Stanford, and we have done just that. This talented group of women will undoubtedly allow us to become a stronger and a more well-rounded track and field team".

Joining the Cardinal women are:

Kori Carter - Claremont H.S. - Claremont, CA
Carter is a three-time California State Champion. She won the 300-meter hurdles as a sophomore and the 100 and 300 hurdles as a junior. Last spring she had the No. 1 time in the nation at 300 hurdles with a time of 41.09. During the summer she gained valuable international experience competing in Italy at the World Youth Championships where she won the silver medal in the 100 hurdles. She has bests of 13.59 for 100 hurdles and 59.89 for 400 hurdles.

Sophie Charlton - Rochester Mayo H.S. - Rochester, MN
Charlton is a six-time all-state runner in Minnesota. She has competed in the 200 meters, the 400 meters, the triple jump and 4x400-reter relay at the state meet two consecutive years. Charlton finished third in 2008 and 2009 in the 400 and has a personal best of 56.73.

Taylor Dewberry - Mount Tabor H.S. - Winston Salem, NC
Dewberry is an experienced 200-meter and 400-meter runner. She finished second in her county in both races last spring and went on to finish 11th over 400 meters at the North Carolina 4A State Meet. She has a personal best of 55.47 for the 400 and 25.23 for the 200.

Leah Francis - Juneau-Douglas H.S. - Juneau, AK
Francis is a three-time Alaska Gatorade Athlete of the Year, winning the award twice in cross country and once in track. She is also a three-time Alaska state champion in cross country. On the track Leah has won three consecutive 4A State Championships at 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters as well as one at 800 meters.

Sophia Ginez - South Brunswick H.S. - Monmouth Junction, NJ
Ginez is a versatile distance runner who has nationally ranked times from 800 meters up to 3200 meters. She is a multiple time all-state honoree in New Jersey at both 1,600 and 3,200 meters with bests in 2009 of 4:53.15 and 10:47.10.

Angela Gradiska - Pinewood H.S. - Los Altos, CA
Gradiska was one of the top sprinters in the nation in 2009. Her times ranked her 10th in the 100 meters and ninth in the 200 nationally. She earned All-State honors in both events at the 2009 California State Meet placing fourth in the 100 and second in the 200. She posted personal bests at the meet of 11.67 for 100 and 23.64 for 200
.

Claire Hawkins - Santa Margarita H.S. - Santa Margarita, CA
Hawkins was the runner-up in the pole vault at the California State Meet last spring with a height of 12-10. She was also the league, county, section and masters champion in 2009. She is the eighth-ranked returning pole vaulter in the nation.


Adrienne Johnson - Carondelet H.S. - Concord, CA
Johnson jumped 5-8 to win the 2009 California State high jump title. She was also the runner-up at the state meet as a sophomore. Johnson has a high jump best of 5-10 and has also jumped 19-2 in the long jump, both at the Mt. Sac Relays.


Ellie McCardwell - Pendleton Heights - Pendleton, IN
McCardwell is the top returning pole vaulter in the nation this year after jumping 13-6 ¼ to win the 2009 Indiana State Championship. She was also the runner-up at Nike Outdoor Nationals earning All-American honors. Her jump of 13-6 ¼ at the state meet is also the new Indiana State Record.

Tate Murray - Lake Oswego H.S. - Lake Oswego, OR
Murray was the runner-up at both 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters at last year's Oregon 6A State Championships. At those championships she ran career bests of 4:37.73 and 10:10.32. She also finished in the top 10 three consecutive years in the 6A Division of the Oregon Cross Country State Championships.

Katie Nelms - Leland H.S. - San Jose, CA
Nelms is one of the nation's top returning hurdlers. She was all-state at the 2009 California State Meet with a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles and a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles. She owns personal bests of 13.70 for 100-meter hurdles, 42.81 in the 300 hurdles and 1:01.16 in the 400 hurdles as well as 11.85 for 100 meters and 24.71 for 200.

Kellie Schueler - Summit H.S. - Bend, OR
Schueler is a nine-time state champion in Oregon. She has swept the 100 meters, the 200 meters and the 400 meters in the 5A Division in 2007, `08 and `09. She owns track bests of 11.68 for 100, 23.69 for 200 and 54.25 for 400. Kellie has demonstrated great versatility by running a 2:08 split on the leadoff leg of a 4x800-meter relay and by placing fourth in the Oregon state cross country meet. She is also the 2007-08 and 2008-09 Gatorade Track Athlete of the Year.

Jessica Tonn - Xavier College Prep - Phoenix, AZ
Tonn is a four-time Footlocker finalist finishing 24th, 20th, 10th and 13th respectively, and earning All-American honors twice. She won the 5A cross country state title three consecutive years and was named the Arizona Gatorade Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2008 and 2009. She is also an eight-time 5A Arizona State Champion on the track where she owns personal bests of 4:50.42 in the 1,600 meters and 10:25.85 in the 3,200.

On the men's side Floreal is pleased to announce that 10 high school seniors have signed national letters of intent to compete at Stanford beginning in the 2010-11 school year. The class of national caliber athletes covers a wide variety of event areas.

"This is yet another recruiting class that will add to our current championship contending teams," said Floreal.

Joining the Cardinal men are:

Michael Atchoo - Troy H.S. - Troy, MI
Atchoo won the 2009 Michigan 1,600-meter state title with a time of 4:07.71 making him one of the top returners for the 2010 track season. This past fall, he won the 2009 Michigan Cross Country State Championship in a time of 15:28. He is a six-time All-State selection in cross country and track and was chosen as the Michigan Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the 2008-2009 season and Cross Country Athlete of the Year for 2009.

Marco Bertolotti - Paul D. Schreiber H.S. - Port Washington, NY
Bertolotti is a two-time Millrose Mile participant, competing in 2009 and 2010. He is also a two-time All-American on the track and has showed his versatility as a distance runner by achieving all-state honors in both the indoor 1,600 meters and outdoor 1600 as well as in cross country competing in New York's Class AA division. He owns a best of 4:13.73 for 1600 meters.

Alfredo Corral - Bishop H.S. - Bishop CA
Corral is 200-meter and 400-meter specialist. Last spring he set personal bests of 22.48 and 49.24 on the same day at San Diego Masters Meet. He is also the two-time defending Coastal League Champion at 400 meters and also doubled back to win the 200 in 2009.


Bronson Duran - Sandia H.S. - Albuquerque, NM
Duran is middle distance specialist with international experience. Last summer he competed at the World Youth Championships in Italy making the semifinal in the 800 meters. Duran was the New Mexico 800-meter state champion in 2008 and followed that up with 2009 titles in the indoor 400 as well as outdoor 400, 800 and 4x400-meter relay. He has run personal bests of 1:20.83 for 600 meters and 1:52.43 for 800 meters.

Colin Hepburn - Glenbrook South H.S. - Glenview, IL
Hepburn is the defending Illinois State Champion at 100 meters where he ran 10.50. He was also the State Champion in the indoor 200 and has run a personal best of 21.71 in that event outdoors. This past summer Colin gained international experience as a member of the gold medal winning and world record setting sprint medley relay at the World Youth Championships in Italy.

Jeremy Hines - Jesuit H.S. - Carmichael, CA
Hines is an outstanding prospect in the throws having recently won the California Indoor Invitational with a personal best of 59-0 ½ in the shot put. That throw currently has him ranked ninth in the country. Hines was also the San Joaquin Section Masters Shot Put champion as well as the San Joaquin Section Delta River Finals champion in 2009.


Kenny Krotzer - Auburn Riverside H.S. - Auburn, WA
Krotzer is an accomplished middle-distance runner out of Auburn High School. He ran bests in 2009 of 1:53.63 and 4:12.48 in the 800 meters and 1600 meters, respectively. He had a successful postseason this fall with a top 10 finish at the Washington state meet and a runner-up finish in the open division at Nike Cross Nationals.

Thomas Mallon - Central Bucks H.S. South - Warrington, PA
Mallon is a three-time State Champion over 800 meters in Pennsylvania. He owns an open best of 1:51.79 and anchored his 4x800-meter relay team at the famed Penn Relays in an official split of 1:49.79. He recently competed in the Millrose Mile at Madison Square Garden finishing fifth.

Erik Olson - Novato H.S. - Novato, CA
Erik won the 2009 D3 California State Cross Country title in a time of 15:01 and is a two-time first team all-state honoree in cross country. Last spring, Erik ran under the famed nine-minute barrier in the 3,200 meters four times with his fastest time being 8:55.19. He has also run 4:09.60 for 1600 meters. Last summer Erik gained international experience while competing at the World Youth Championships in Italy where he ran 8:18.84 for 3000 meters.


Adam Thorne - Ferris H.S. - Spokane, WA
Thorne placed 10th individually and led his team to a runner-up finish at the Nike Cross Nationals this past fall. On the track, he has run a best of 4:10.05 in the mile at the 2009 Portland Track Festival. He is also a multiple-time all-state performer over 1,600 meters, 3,200 meters and cross country.
