Johnson and Reese soar into Albuquerque for USA Indoor Champs
INDIANAPOLIS - Chelsea Johnson (Atascadero HS, UCLA) and Brittney Reese highlight a talented group of women's field events at the 2010 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, February 27-28 at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.
The third and final event of the USA Track & Field 2010 Indoor Visa Championship Series, the USA Indoor Championships will be televised February 28, from 7 - 9 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN2. In addition to competing for a total prize purse of $117,000, U.S. athletes will have the opportunity to qualify for Team USA roster spots for the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, March 12-14, in Doha, Qatar.
Women's high jump
2005 World Outdoor silver medalist Chaunte Howard (J.W. North HS, Riverside 2002; Georgia Tech 2006) leads the field in the women's high jump. A three-time USA Outdoor champion, Howard is chasing her second indoor national title. High jumper turned heptathlete Sharon Day (Costa Mesa HS (Costa Mesa, Calif.) '02; Cal Poly-SLO '08) is focusing on the high jump this indoor season and hoping to win her first indoor crown, as is 2009 USA Indoor runner-up Deidre Mullen.
Women's pole vault
2009 World Outdoor silver medalist Chelsea Johnson is on her way up in American women's pole vaulting. Looking to win her first USA Indoor national title, Johnson is well on her way having just set an indoor personal best of 4.62m/150in75. Here to challenge Johnson is 2006 NCAA Outdoor champion Lacy Janson, who set a lifetime best 4.66m/150in5 two weeks ago in Arkansas.
Women's long jump
Reigning World Outdoor champion Brittney Reese is the top entrant in the women's long jump. Also entered is 2008 Olympic Games heptathlon silver medalist Hyleas Fountain, who has the farthest jump by an American this indoor season. Fountain won the event in 2008 and then finished as the runner-up to Reese last year. 2008 Olympic Games finalist Funmi Jimoh and 2009 World Outdoor finalist Brianna Glenn (La Mirada HS; Arizona) will also be jumping at the chance to win.
Women's triple jump
Two-time USA Indoor and reigning USA Outdoor champion Shakeema Welsch hopes to keep her streak alive and win another crown in the women's triple jump. She will be challenged by 2008 NCAA Outdoor and '07 NCAA Indoor champion Erica McLain (Stanford).
Women's shot put
Four-time USA Indoor champion Jillian Camarena (Woodland HS; Stanford) enters the women's shot put looking for her fifth national indoor title. 2008 Olympic Games finalist and two-time USA Outdoor champion Michelle Carter will try to keep that from happening as she chases her first national indoor title. Carter, who placed sixth at last year's World Outdoor Championships, ended her 2009 season ranked #7 in the world by Track & Field News.
Women's weight throw
Three-time USA Indoor champion and 2008 Olympian Amber Campbell will be chasing her fourth-consecutive title in the women's weight throw. Cambell will square off against 2004 Olympian Erin Gilreath, who won USA Indoor title in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and is also hunting a fourth national indoor crown.
