Louisville Track and Field Earns Five NCAA Qualifying Marks and Win Eight Events at Hoosier Hills Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams had yet another dazzling meet Friday at the Hoosier Hills Invitational held at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse. The Cardinals rounded out the competition by posting two NCAA automatic qualifying marks, three NCAA provisional qualifying marks and winning eight event titles.

The No. 12 ranked Cardinal women were led again by throwers D'Ana McCarty and Jere' Summers (Berkeley HS, Berkeley, CA; Cal State Northridge) who placed first and second in the weight throw and first and third in the shot put.

McCarty, a native of Indianapolis, Ind. and the reigning NCAA Indoor weight throw champion, was not far from home but seemed to feel like she was there. She won both the shot put and the weight throw. Her toss of 51-01 (15.57m) in the shot put was an NCAA provisional qualifier, while her heave of 73-03.50 (22.34m) in the weight throw was an NCAA automatic qualifier.

Summers finished second in the weight throw with an NCAA automatic mark of 70-10.50/21.60m and third in the shot put with an NCAA provisional distance of 50-05.25/15.37m.

Senior Rachel Gehret also had an outstanding day for the No.12 ranked women. She won both the long jump (19-02/5.84m) and the high jump (5-10.75/1.80m). Her mark in the high jump was an NCAA provisional qualifier.

The women rounded out the events with senior Saravia Richardson winning the 200-meter dash in 24.40 and junior Kim Grieshaber winning the 3,000-meter run in 9:58.25.

The Cardinal men were again led by their fierce jumping group.

Senior Rudon Bastian won the long jump with a leap of 24-02.50 (7.38m). He was followed by senior Andre Black in second (24-0.25/7.32m) and sophomore Wesley Smith in third (23-08.25/7.22m). The jumping group was not done though.

Sophomore Seon Powell won the triple jump with a leap of 48-08.75 (14.85m). The St. Elizabeth, Jamaica native's closest competitor was a little more than a foot and a half behind.

The Cards will travel to New York City next weekend to compete in the long-awaited BIG EAST Indoor Championships.
