ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Redshirt junior Stephanie James Granite Bay, Calif. (Granite Bay HS) and senior Karoline Koehler [Erfurt, Germany (Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium)] each won their event in record-setting fashion to lead the San Diego State track and field team at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday in Albuquerque, N.M. With their 20 combined points, the Aztecs jumped into a tie for second place with 30 points after six events. TCU is tied with SDSU, while Brigham Young leads the meet with 72 points.
James captured her third consecutive pole vault title (2007-08, 2010), clearing a height of 14 feet, 1.25 inches. James, a member of the MWC 10th Anniversary Indoor Track and Field Team, had already automatically qualified for the NCAA indoor championships with her then personal-best jump of 14-00.00 on Feb. 5. Today's 14-01.25 set a school record, a MWC all-time record and a MWC championship meet record. Heading into this weekend, only five athletes in the country had vaulted higher than her 14-01.25 (according to www.tfrrs.org).
Koehler, meanwhile, won her second straight MWC indoor long jump title with a leap of 21-03.25. The mark automatically qualified her for the NCAA indoor meet, broke her own school record, broke the MWC championship meet record, broke the Albuquerque Convention Center record and tied a MWC all-time record. Heading into the weekend, only three others in the nation had gone further (according to www.tfrrs.org).
The long jump wrapped up a busy day for Koehler. Koehler posted the top time in the 60-meter preliminary heat, clocking a NCAA provisional qualifying and personal-best time of 7.38 seconds. She also had the seventh-fastest 200-meter time (24.52) in the preliminary heat to advance to tomorrow's final.
James and Koehler weren't the only San Diego State student-athletes to score in the pole vault and long jump, respectively. Kelsy Hintz [Crescent City, Calif. (Del Norte HS)] took fifth in the pole vault with a huge personal-record clear of 12-09.50. It is also tied for the fourth-best vault in school history. Kai Wheeler San Diego, Calif. (Rancho Bernardo HS) finished fifth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 19-04.75, improving on her fifth-best jump in school history, set in 2008 (19-02.50).
In relay action, the distance medley quartet of Josefine Koskinen [Stockholm, Sweden (Stockholm University)], AnSherae Devine Las Vegas, Nev. (Western HS), Amy Brown [Sydney, Australia (St. Lukes Grammar School)] and Michelle Martinez [Burbank, Calif. (John Burroughs HS)] finished with a time of 12:26.39 for the third-fastest indoor DMR in program history.
Briana Johnson [Orlando, Fla. (University HS)]led the preliminary heat times, taking second overall in the 60-meter hurdles with an indoor best of 8.51. It is the fifth-fastest time in school history and qualifies her for tomorrow's final.
Annimari Korte Kirkkonummi [Finland (Univ. of Georgia)] also qualified for tomorrow's final in the 60-meter hurdles (8.69), while Nicole Stone Ontario, Calif. (Rancho Cucamonga HS) advanced in both the 200 (24.17, fifth-fastest time in school history) and the 400 (55.86), and Koskinen qualified in the 800 (2:13.92).
The final day of the MWC indoor championships will begin tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. MT with the triple jump trials and final.
