JACKSONVILLE -- Track and field action continued Tuesday at the 2015 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships, as 12 champions were crowned during day two action at Hodges Stadium on the campus of University of North Florida.
Antuane Dennard (Lawrenceville, Georgia) won the 15-16 boys decathlon, finishing with 6,381 points. Dennard won the 110mH (14.87), discus (36.58m/120-0) and 1,500 meters (4:29.39) on Tuesday and was the day one leader heading into Tuesday. Dennard now has his first national title of 2015 with three individual events to go (110mH, 400mH, high jump) at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships.
3,000m race-walking finals for divisions 15-16 and 17-18 as well as multi events concluded Tuesday afternoon. Jessica Heiser-Whatley (Greer, South Carolina) eclipsed the rest of the 15-16 girls race walk by 17 seconds finishing with a time of 15:53.47. Melissa Endy (Westfield, New Jersey) crossed second in 16:11.23 and Kirra Facer (Murrieta, California) finished third in 17:16.82.
Ashleigh Resch (Beavercreek, Ohio) secured the 17-18 women’s 3,000m walk title in similar fashion with a time of 14:33.58, winning by a tremendous margin. Amberly Melendez (Edinburg, Texas) and Nayeli Cisneros (Elgin, Illinois) finished second and third, respectively, in 14:58.20 and 16:00.19.
In the 15-16 boys’ 3,000m walk, Jordan Crawford (Douglasville, Georgia) won in 15:15.21 with Jonathan Aguilar (Alamo, Texas) coming in second in 15:26.69. Eduardo Uria (McAllen, Texas) rounded out the top three finishing in 15:51.51.
The last race of the day was the most dominant performance this week in the 17-18 men’s race walk final. Matias Serna (San Juan, Texas) finished in 15:10.39, nearly four minutes ahead of Matthew Schmidt (Brenham, Texas) in 19:06.33 in second. Andrew Lofton (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) crossed in third in 20:55.27.
In the 15-16 girls’ heptathlon, G’Auna Edwards (Spring, Texas) came away with first with 4,684 points. After winning the 100mH on Monday and turned in the best performance in the long jump Tuesday with her leap of 5.59m/18-4.25.
Lyndsey Lopes (Clovis, California) continued her first day lead to win the 17-18 women’s heptathlon with a total of 4,921 points. Lopes had the top time in 200m in 2:23.22 after tying for the best height in the high jump on Monday with her clearance of 1.65m/5-5.
Mia Moore (Alpharetta, Georgia) won the 11-12 girls’ pentathlon with a score of 2,982 points and Akinni James (Kennesaw, Georgia) won the 11-12 boys’ pentathlon, scoring 2,486 points. In the girls’ 9-10 triathlon, Cheyla Scott (Charlotte, North Carolina) won with 1,511 points and Ayden Powers (Modesto, California) won the boys’ 9-10 division with 751 points scored.
