JACKSONVILLE -- Thousands of participants began to arrive in Jacksonville, Florida on the University of North Florida campus to begin events for the 2015 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships. All events will be held at Hodges Field from June 27-August 2.

It was a light day Monday, with only the pentathlon, race walk and the first days of heptathlon and decathlon being contested.

In the 13-14 division 3,000 meter race walk, it was a pair of impressive victories from the girls and boys divisions. Five-time national champion Taylor Ewert (Beavercreek, Ohio), who also broke an American record in her age group earlier this year, walked the best time of the girls race walk in 15:03.88, with Juan Moscoso (Longwood, Florida) taking care of the boys division in 15:45.36.

From the 1,500 race walk in the 9-10-year-old division, Sanjana Perungulam (Katy, Texas) took the girls’ title in 8:56.11, while Matthew Hebert (Tomball, Texas) won the boys’ title with a time of 8:58.29.

The other 1,500 race walk was in the 11-12 division with Grace Endy (Westfield, New Jersey) winning the girls’ final at 7:46.67, while the boys’ title went to Christopher Renn (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) who won by nearly a minute in 8:58.29.

The combined events also saw strong first day performances in the girls’ 15-16 heptathlon, as Sterling Lester (Kennesaw, Georgia) leads G’Auna Edwards (Spring, Texas) after the first day by just 96 points, 3,048-2,952. Edwards had the top time in the 100-meter hurdles, while Lester strung together three top-two performances in Monday’s events to take the top spot heading into day two.

Antuane Dennard (Lawrenceville, Georgia) embarked on his first “event” of four over the course of the week, the 15-16 boys’ decathlon. Dennard leads through five events with 3,508 points, never placing lower than third with wins in the high jump (1.90m/6-2.75) and 400 meters (50.58), runner-up finishes in the 100 meters (11.38) and long jump (6.13m/20-1.50), and a third-place throw of 12.11m/39-8.75 in the shot put.

Lyndsey Lopes (Clovis, California) leads the girls’ 17-18 heptathlon with a score of 3,051 points, taking wins in the high jump (1.65m/5-5) and shot put (9.79m/32-1.50). In the boys’ 17-18 decathlon, Aaron Pullin (Centralia, Washington) leads by just 100 points over Luke Littlefield (Temple, Texas), 3530-3430. Pullin took the win in the 100 meters (11.09) and finished top five in three of his other five events, while Littlefield stayed consistent throughout with a top-10 finish in every event.
