Rowbury earns USATF AOW with two championship crowns in two days

3/4/2015

INDIANAPOLIS -- Olympian Shannon Rowbury has been awarded USATF Athlete of the Week after her rare double at the USATF Indoor Championships in Boston.

Rowbury (Portland, Oregon) won the mile Saturday and the two mile Sunday with her times of 4:34.40 and 9:43.95, respectively. Her mile victory was her first USATF title since winning the 1,500m at 2009 USATF Outdoors, and it was her first USATF Indoors title since 2008. Even battling a cold, Rowbury’s indoor season ended on a successful note.

“I feel like each season, I’m able to just improve a little bit and a little bit more,” Rowbury said after her second title. “With the end goal being Beijing Worlds and Rio Olympics, (I know) I have to execute each step along the way to get there.

“It’s such a blessing to have this as a job,” Rowbury continued. “I want to really take advantage of every opportunity.”

Prior to the USATF Indoor Championships, she was the NYRR Wanamaker Mile champion with her time of 4:24.32 at the 2015 NYRR Millrose Games. Rowbury finished the 2015 domestic indoor season undefeated.

Other standout performances this week included:

  • Casimir Loxsom (Seattle, Washington) set a new American Record in the men’s 600m and took home the win in 1:15.33 on Sunday, March 1 at USATF Indoor Championships in Boston. He clocked the fourth-fastest time ever and was a quarter-second better than his own AR set on Jan. 24.

  • Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) won her third consecutive USATF Indoor title after throwing 19.45m/63-9.75 in the sixth round on Sunday in Boston.

  • Anselm LeBourne (Maplewood, New Jersey) ran 4:13.77 in the 1,500 meters in Boston to break the previous M55 World Masters Record of 4:21.94 set by Pierre Faucheur in 2010.

  • AG Kruger (Ashland, Ohio) tossed 23.41m/76-9.75 to win his ninth USATF Indoor title and his 14th overall on Sunday, March 1 in Boston.

  • Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Missouri) set a new NCAA DI 5,000m record in 15:12.22 on Sunday, March 1 in New York, trimming two seconds off the record from 2004, which was held by another Providence runner, Kim Smith of New Zealand.

Now in its 14th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
